Hey guys, this is my first post on this blog. I have a 2017 brz in Canada, about 31XX kms on it. I got a CEL the other day, dropped it off to the dealer and they called me today saying its a problem with the air-fuel ratio. The service advisor said they completed a couple tests and it seems that everything is fine. He asked me which octane fuel I use. I use 93-94 octane, he then suggested that I use 91 cause I might be running too rich... does that make sense?

No it does not. The octane level of fuel has nothing to do with how rich or lean it runs. All octane means is it has more knock resistance. Other than that all fuel is the same.

Is the car completely stock?

Yes, completely stock. I have a tranny mount and a rear shifter bushing.

I am getting it back today and will keep an eye out for anything abnormal really. On another note, does the ethanol content of the fuels have anything to do with this issue? (ex: Shell Nitro ethanol free vs. say Petro-Canada Ultra 94)

Nope they should not affect the mix either. You don't happen to know what the code was do you?

Not yet, I'll find out and post it here when I get the car back today.

Check your air filter. If running rich it could be clogged.

So, same as @Oxyg3n , I got Codes P119F and P219A. They said they cleared them and did a couple of tests. Nothing coming up as an issue. They told me to keep an eye on it and if it comes back up, they will take the car, give me a loner and start a case with subaru's technical department.

So not a rich or lean situation specifically just an imbalance. Could be many things but the "common" causes are leaky intake of exhaust, plugged filter or dirty MAF sensor. None of it earth shattering but if it keeps coming back they will indeed need to dig deeper.

That seems a bit extreme. Any idea what the code was?

They can all have CELs. The question is what caused the CEL. The CEL can mean several thousand different things and just saying "the light came on" is meaningless.

I understand that, it's just funny that the few people here speaking up mostly own a BRZ, which are presumably all manual, and are mostly producing the same code. A batch of lemons is more what I was getting at, someone earlier mentioned something about how the build dates would be interesting to trace
