This from another forum, for what it's worth...

"FRS direct injection fule pump problems.
Just wanted to give you all a heads up. I had to replace this pump today due to the fact it was making a loud chriping noise almost like a wet drive belt. The toyota reps came out to my work and listened to it. It only happens once the temp gets to around 140f. They explained it to me as follows. The pump has a washer inside of it which if not lubercated properly it will make that noise. They said that Japan gas is way better and has more lub in it the USA gas. SO the usa gas casued the washer to not be lubed properly. There is no known fix or TSB for this. i got a new pump but keep your ears open so you can catch it and report it. Its not a preformance issue just an annoying sound thats all. Hope this helps."

First, that quote is not from my experience but from someone else on another forum.

My car does chirp, and like yours, I have noticed a small chirp while driving which coincides with the A/C compressor engaging (this also coincides with a small power drop or lag that I can feel when driving). If I turn the A/C off the "occasional chirp" goes away. Whether the idle chirp and A/C chirp are related, I can't say.

I recently changed my oil at 1000 miles and to some degree the chirp is minimized but it is still there. It really doesn't bother me as much as most on this forum. If they find a solution, I might let them work on it, but until it causes some other issue I'll leave it alone.

The occasional chirp is related to the A/C. However, that is independent of the crickets chirping (non A/C related in further tests I performed today).

Great.

What I don't understand is why it bothers you that people like me are adamant about having Subaru address the issue. What exactly do you gain from trying to silence me? Nothing, but you have everything to lose in the process.

What I'm suggesting is that if the sound does not bother you, then stop posting in the threads relating to the noise. You've obviously already accepted their bullshit answer, so go away and let the people who are still bothered by it make an attempt to have it removed from not just their car, but yours as well and everyone who buys one in the future.

I realize you didn't have to replace the HPFP(you did it for tuning), but you did and followed up by saying the noise WENT AWAY. Are we asking too much to have them use whatever magical part you installed that doesn't make this idiotic noise as normal? Obviously one company can do it, Subaru should follow their lead. Again, this is by your own admission from your own personal experience so we cannot and will not dismiss it as hearsay.

edit: I just read the post a few above mine in which the Toyo tech mentioned gas and lack of proper lubrication. I'm not a mechanic or anything close to it, but if true, then I'd say you nailed the issue many many pages ago when you mentioned the HPFP...that in conjunction with your personal experience documented above seems to be a pretty good answer as to how to get rid of the sound...replace the part in question with one that isn't so picky about gasoline mixtures(again, only if true).

I'll admit I am partially guilty of posting one issue in a different thread, but lets not do it again. Start a new thread please if there is a new problem, for everyones benefit. Wait, that's this thread! Oops.

If this is the cause of the chirping, below? The simple solution to fixing the crap fuel could be to add some 2 stroke oil to the tank. The added bonus would be a slight gain in economy/power. I add 2T at 1-200 in my current 2.5 TD to compensate for the lack of lubrication in the low sulphur diesel. If I had my GTS 86 now and it was chirping I would add 100ml, that's 1-500 at the next fill up to test the theory. Good quality 2T.
