Before the dealership will let you drive your new car off the lot, they will require proof of insurance.

Before the insurance company will issue a policy, they will require a valid driver's license.

Checkmate.

Any good dealer won't let you drive the car off the lot. Sometimes an expired license slips through the cracks, but an expired license is also a sign of something that could go wrong in the deal so people look for it.

Buying out of state on an expired license, you're asking for issues, and at the very minimum you should bring someone else to technically drive the vehicle. That is IF the dealer will even go through with it after the red flags pop up.

Also, insurance companies won't generally put insurance on a vehicle they know will be purposely driven by someone that cannot obtain a current drivers' license.

Maybe different here but in the 10 new cars we have bought I don't think I have ever been asked for a driver's license. They don't care if I can drive the car they just want to sell it to me. The insurance company is a different matter since they do indeed care about the status of the primary driver's license.

It is almost always the first thing they ask for. A photo ID is usually needed by the bank, and they expect a drivers' license for a car purchase. There are always exceptions, but I can't remember a car buying experience I didn't give them a drivers' license for. A lot of dealers actually scan your license and put it in their customer tracking system, but that would be more like store policy.

Identity theft is a big deal too, so it is also another way to check that is not happening.

Your license is expired but you have to wait 3-4 months to renew it? That doesn't make any sense

Makes perfect sense. Entirely avoidable situation does not merit snowflake special privileges. He f'd up and needs to bite the bullet, waste the better part of a day waiting in line to get a temporary license. OP: Suck it up buttercup!

I was wondering about that as well. Thought maybe it was a State thing or something? Here if it expires you just go into the office, they give you a paper temp one to use with your expired card and send the new card in the mail. No fuss and no waiting months.

They privatized our version of the DMV here. Since they get paid by the Government for each transaction they now pump you through as fast as possible. Where something before would take hours they now will have you in and out in minutes. It is magical!

Thank you all. I know I sound bit rushy and probably stupid at the same time which I think I am at the moment. Here are my last two questions; 1. How dangerous is it for me to purchase the car without seeing it in person? (It's CPO by Subaru so I feel little safe) and would they still ask me to show them to a proof of insurance? 2. Does name that's written on my proof of insruance has to match with my driver's license? because I was going to have my current vehicle register under my brother's name on the insurance since my driver license is expired. Sorry if it annoys or bothers you. Thank you.

Are you sure you are ready to purchase a car? Sounds like you have a lot of shit to figure out first.
