One thing I see happening is are car has a remote oil filter that is above the engine. So I think if you let the car sit to long the oil from the filter drains down in the oil pan. When you start the car and Warm it up it refills the oil filter. that's why we are getting strange readings. So I guess we should do it like the manual says

Actually that's part of the "wait 5 minutes" rule. Doesn't take long for it to empty.

On a side note, after installing my mechanical pressure gauge I find it a little disturbing counting two and a half Mississippis before the oil hits the journals.

Gotta force myself to quit looking.

You have a mechanical gauge too? I thought I was the only one.

What pressure do you get on cold start with that heavy stuff?

about 120 cold but the big difference is I have never seen it below 50. BTW I wouldn't call 5/30 heavy, I would call 0/20 water, I saw below 20 in the summer with that stuff.

It does worry me how thin the oil is. I suspect it's for emissions/fuel efficiency.

Once my 0w-20 runs out I'm using 5w-30

All three of you-ens ........ this is a dip stick reading thread NOT a weight of oil thread ..... THAT just confuses the dipstick readings .......

But a thicker oil should make reading the dipstick easier.

I just wish it made reading this thread easier!

Also, it makes things quicker if you count the "mississippis" the way my location is written.........

Well, that's true ...... but my point is that would just add another variable to reading the dip stick. ........

That goes along with how dirty the oil is, what kind of rag/paper towel you use to wipe off the dipstick, the lighting in your driveway/garage, which way the dipstick was inserted. the speed of which the dip stick was pulled out, the angle one held the dip stick to read it, which side of the dipstick to read, let alone the surface tension of the oil and its ability to adhere to the metal dip stick.

Bubba says to open the hood, pull out the dipstick and if the end of the oily part is between the two holes, stick it back in and shut the hood, you're good to go, ............what's the big deal ......

You're making it sound waaaaaay too simple. This is a car forum, FFS! It's our duty to argue over all the shit about which normal people don't give a fuck.
