and that is just a sample size of one. Other set ups eliminate it more (or less I guess).

One vehicle with one set up not one pull. Silly Extra.

Depends the gear and unfortunately there is no norm. Some might use 3rd gear, others 4th gear, others 5th gear. It is also an easy way to show gains from nothing (before & after). The 3rd gear will always show lower output than the higher gears.

Yep. A very quick and dirty search shows that depending on gear the average pull is between about 10 and 20 seconds. So for the sake of argument let's just say 15. That puts time at about 2.5 seconds for each 1,000 rpm. This means that if running from 2,000 to full rpm the dip has an average impact on acceleration for somewhere around 1.2 seconds. It of course does not mean you are not accelerating at all during that time just that you have a minor reduction. This sure blows the whole "I get in the dip and can't match traffic speed" argument right out the window.

If a torque falls in a dip but no one is there to plot it...

I've come to terms with the dip and it no longer effects me during normal driving. Just give the bitch gas and don't baby it.

I'm wondering if the automatic equipped BRZ/86 torque dip is less noticeable due to converter slippage and the computer selecting the gear.
When driving my 6 spd. I just keep the RPM up, because, after all, it IS a four banger. I just chalk it up to normal driving procedure for this particular machine. My 2001 Miata has no torque dip, but it will occasionally scare the hell out of you if you're trying to pull out into traffic and you're not up in the RPM range. |
