I bit the bullet with temps getting up in the 70s and 80s lately. Fingers crossed averages won't go too far back down.

This winter? I bought snow tires in September/October and... they've sat on the ground for the whole season. One day of "snow" and I'm pretty sure we haven't had a single stint of four consecutive days below 40f.

I'm just bitter because the tires could have been better stuff.

This has everything to do with where you live and what you run as summer tires, and nothing to do with any set date. I haven't changed mine off the stockers this year. I don't have winter tires and at this point, I don't plan on buying any until next winter. Apparently, I live near Spacemane and we only had one problematic snowfall this winder that was melted in a couple days. I just carpooled with the brother who has a truck those days.
