Yes this. The dealer told me to never lose that metal tag or it'll be a pain. That key and tag just sits in my house.

I had a key cut by the VIN from my dealer, takes about a week to get. Then pay the service department for programing. Luckily, I know the right people and he did it while the car was in for an alignment for free.

If you are down to the last Master Key, you should get a spare master key made ASAP since if the last Master Key is lost, there are not way around it but to replace your entire BCU Security box and related parts which is about $2000 plus labor. A spare key should be $280 if you still have a master.

As much as this seems ridiculous, most manufacturers just resorted to this so that a stolen car is that much more difficult to make operational without a key that matches the security algorithm of the body control.
It did effectively reduce greatly the amount of cars which are stolen each year all over the world which are made more recent. And does it's part to find missing cars too sometimes as buyers of stolen cars need to bring the car to a dealer to program, and allow them to discover stolen cars as database will not allow reported cars to be reprogrammed.

Yes there are hacks I suppose, as organized crime doesn't just disappear, but even these hacks seem to be very expensive now since they will need an alternative way to unlock the security, and are worth the effort for thieves only for very expensive cars. Which leaves less expensive cars to not be such a wide-spread victim of theft.

Just imagine the $300 to be another insurance, which costs you $10 a month of a 3 year ownership to keep your cars safer than 90's Honda cars which seem to just disappear for a lot of people so often....

Yep, if a professional car thief wants your Bentley or Porsche they are going to take your Bentley or Porsche no matter what security is on it. The modern security systems work against the screwdriver jammed in the key hole crowd and that probably 99.99% of car thefts. If a pro is stealing our cars it is to strip and sell the parts separately so they don't care if it ever has a key.

Getting a spare key is a great negotiating tool that people rarely think of when buying a new car. if a dealer has reached the point where they won't budge on price then it is time to start getting free extras. Since a third key is just a couple of dollars to them (massive mark up) then it is easy to get one thrown in. I got one with our last 6 new cars.
