Random Thoughts - Part Deux [NO POLITICS]

Almost all of my furniture is from Ikea and has held up pretty well through a couple of moves.

We have plenty of IKEA furniture. I'm typing on an IKEA desk at the moment. We also own a Stickley sofabed and recliner. There is just no comparison between the build quality of a high-end piece of furniture and the best that IKEA makes. I'm not saying IKEA is garbage, but it IS disposable. Our dressers, for instance, are falling apart.

That said, most furniture stores sell garbage. Quality is a rare thing nowadays. Even Stickley isn't what it used to be.

My favorite place for cheap quality is Cost Plus. Not sure if they're in Canada, but periodically they get something good. We have an entertainment center and a shelf I use for clothing. Cheap but SOLID, way more solid than anything I've ever seen at IKEA. I also like the Skandia shelving from The Container Store.

My bed and my dressers are ikea, no issues with them yet. Dressers are 2 years old, bed is one year old, though.

The sofa I bought (it's actually a sofa bed) is comfy enough, and luckily will double as a bed for when I piss the woman off (yay!). Super happy with the coffee table too. Ikea is certainly good enough for what I'm looking for.

Eventually, we shall upgrade, but neither of us really care for expensive furniture. So long as it lasts long enough, I'm happy. Will most likely be going back to ikea at some point in the next week to grab a TV stand/shelf/storage thing.

Put some glue and real screws in it during assembly. Should hold up plenty well

Not cleaning up any cables until we get the TV stand and I bring my old bookshelf here. After that, we can worry about making things pretty.

The important thing is, we're sitting on the couch, and we're enjoying our drinks that are on the coffee table while we watch Superbad. Life is good right now.

The last piece I've bought from them was the infamous Poang chair. I love the design but not so much the fit and finish. I ended up buying 3 sets from 3 different countries of manufacture and combined all the best bits, then refund the rest. When I told the girl at the return counter she died laughing.

I think the best piece I've ever found was a slightly used Fritz Hansen Oxford office chair. Picked it up at a private furniture sale off a closed condo sales office. Paid $50 bucks (my friend told me to lowball it down to $25 but I felt bad) then came home Googled just to realized it's $3500 new LMFAO! My desk is just a cheap plastic folding table from Staples (bought it as a temp solution but forgot about it for nearly 15 years).

Went to ikea, shopped around, picked stuff out, drove to her place, put it all together in under 2 hours. Not bad for going it alone.




Edit: still not sure I'm 100% sold on this "growing up" thing. Although, furniture shopping was far more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Probably because I knew exactly what I was getting and didn't need to screw around with trying to narrow options down.

There something rather pleasing about making a space your own. Maybe it's a territorial thing IDK but I love customizing all the things, house, car, computer. Could be appeasing my creative side too.
