Troller just kidding I'm glad we have choices for this car and fact they at used the R&D and feedback they have on the LF-A and IS-F the way they programmed the AT shifts on the car is commendable. I'd be curious to what DCT can do on this car.

Hey Guys,
Thought I should give some comments here as I am a valet driver and I have driven quite literally every single car on the market that is priced over 30k including ferrari's, lambo's, and mclarens. I am going to tell you right now that comparing the FRS to a 3-series is apples and walnuts. The 3-series is built with a completely different purpose. It has the most emphasis on driving straight. period. Everything in a bmw is going to feel stiff and tight inside (which is quite nice). The FRS/BRZ/86 is not like this. This car is built to be agile, and only the skilled driver will be able to pull the most out of it (which is why I have one). To me this car compares best to the porsche 911/caymen/boxster. Driving porsches feels most similar to my FRS (and is why I usually get the porsches at my work over other drivers). The 911 is meant to be an agile rocket, while the caymen/boxster is just agile like our FRS. I wouldn't be afraid to try and get some slide out of a porsche since I am already used to the feel. Now whether you should get the FRS over a 328i. It really depends what you want. I came to the FRS from a vw mk6 Jetta, so it was a drastic difference tho for the better. People in my life were annoyed with the lack of space and lack of practicality, but it is not impossible. I was decent enough to stay away from 2-seaters like the mx-5 or 370z, but I really wanted a 2-door car. In terms of performance, you may not feel like much of an improvement, and you will probably lack some QoL features that your BMW has. Hell, even though the FRS is an upgrade to me it doesn't have heated seats which my jetta had (you don't need em in the FRS but that is another story). If you want to keep the luxury and have more sport than you may be better off with a 335i which are not that difficult to find. At the end of the day it is up to what you want and what you feel good in. I wanted the porsche feel since it is one of my favourite cars so I went with the poorest-mans porsche which is the FRS. |

I have only expressed my opinion and objection to another post. I think I am free to do that. It is wrong to comment as if AT doesn't allow manual shifting and sport driving. There is an undeniable attitude here as if driving AT makes a driver inferior. MT is not a must have to enjoy this car. I have driven MT for years and got my license with MT. If you enjoy the clutch and stick, sure, it is yours. But I don't give a hoot for that anymore, neither Formula 1.

Comparing the transmission in this car to the transmissions in F1 is about as relevant as comparing the engine in this thing to an F1 engine.

In terms of sheer value it is trade down because you are going from a comfortable and easier to drive car to a car with niche appeal to Car enthusiasts. Not to mention the price $35k vs $25k.
But if you actually love spirited driving on twisties and nice roads it is definitely an upgrade moving to a smaller, lighter and dedicated sportscar. if you think u are going to spend more time in traffic and DDing then the BMW is definitely the more practical car while also being a little fun. In terms of power , the Autos might feel a littler slower. But the MT FRS should be roughly the same. That torque dip is annoying as hell though , but higher in the rev bands and it wont really be much slower or something. Also as far as Brand image or w/e goes , I dont think going from a 3 series to a FRS is gonna do anything. I live in the bay area and 3 series,A4s,IS are about as common as Camrys and Accords. They are just everywhere. Unless you drive something a little higher end on the brand like an M3 or something, I dont think most people care. Last edited by shadoken; 10-21-2016 at 07:07 PM. |
