I didn't realize I liked our system in Norway before I began to comprehend how things works elsewhere.

If buying a new car: Delivered from dealer with permanent plates and ownership documents.

If buying a used car from dealer: Plates stays on and with the car, new ownership documents issued by dealer.

If buying a used car from private citizen: Plates stays on and with the car, new ownership documents issued by any local office of the department of roads and vehicles.

Liability insurance/third party insurance is mandatory and stays valid with the car as long as it has plates. Billed to current registered owner.

I like that way even better than ours.

Had the problem when i bought a car out of state. DMV issued me a new moving permit for another 30 days after going in and explaining what was happening

I solved it by contacting the DMV in person, the local sheriff's office, and the District Attorney's office.

If what you say fully describes the situation (you've satisfied all of your obligations in the sale, and the dealer has not lived up to their's), contact the DMV immediately and follow through on any suggestions they may have.

Good luck.

I find it interesting that everyone seems to assume the problem is with the dealership.

I think a much more probable scenario is the problem lies with the DMV. I mean, we all know how organized, effecient, and customer-oriented most state DMVs are.

You're lucky. Around here near the Quebec border Service Ontario gets littered with Quebecers buying and selling cars. And they NEVER have the paper work... Maybe it's just because I've bought so many cars that it's easy for me. But the damn Quebecers try to argue with the people behind the desk! It's crazy how much of a hassle it can be.

Mass is easy. No such thing as a temp tag, go to a dealer they will give you a new tag, bigger dealers even have actual registry personnel that work in the dealership. If you buy a used car they'll either switch the plates for a trade in or issue new plates. They go to the registry for you and contact your insurance company for you if needed. Easy as possible.

This Too Shall Pass...soon I hope. My last two dealer buys were late with tags. 1. SC dealer who "hand walks all paperwork to the NC office" never called me after 30+ days and when they had the plate I drove (another car) to pick it up 2. NC dealer that I called after 30 days and they were going to mail another temp but sent permanent plate the next day. I quit "professional driving" 25 years ago but still have a CDL and obey rules most people ignore. "I touched a fuel pump in NJ and I liked it!"
