Bringing this one back from the dead, was just thinking about this...I would love T-Tops or Targa Top. Having said that I've never owned a car with either.

I'd do T-tops in a heartbeat. I could see it being doable, I know someone who does this for a living to other cars, I need to find out what it'd cost for this car.

I have a sunroof in my other car and rarely use it, it's either too hot or too cold or too noisy. But it would be a nice option, but doubtful the sales level would warrant it. Although the new Miata has the RF, retractable hardtop. For me, it also goes against the "light weight" mantra, plus you're adding it up high and possibly loosing rigidity, not good. If anything, the car needs to be lighter.

I would do a targa if available as OEM. You can actually get them made at many places if you have the money and understand to will change the whole nature of the car. When you start cutting out structure you either need to add bracing elsewhere actually adding weight or accept that you are going to have more body flex. Ok if you just want a cruiser but not so great if you want a track machine. The other drawback is that storing the inserts would be a pain. You would either lose all trunk space or leave them at home and hope it doesn't rain. Most t or targa tops I have seen also seem to start to leak after only a couple of years so yeah u need to be able to live with that if a DD.

As far as the cover, there is another option. My '83 Z28 had a custom targa top. the cover was made like a convertible top with a form fitted bit on the front and back that matched the roof. You could basically roll it up and throw it in the back. The only time it ever leaked in 80,000 miles and all kinds of weather (it was a daily driver in DC and took many road trips) was when some bugs got stuck under it when it was put on. Pulled under a bridge, cleaned it up and all was well. I did have to have a new one made after about 3 years due to sun and cracking, but a local shop used the old one as a template and it even better. You can see the roof behind my '85 MR2 in the posting from last week on my Owner's Journal. The body flex is absolutely correct though. While I couldn't tell 99% of the time, the car ended up being totaled when it was hit from behind by a dump truck and pushed into a pickup in front of it (it and the pickup were parked). The frame bent up right under the targa roof.

But a T-top done right wouldn't take away structural rigidity but it will add weight with the extra bracing.

What happens when one of your friends throws your roof off a cliff during the winter?

I would think they would need to be thrown off of the same cliff!

Welp, personally, if we would have wanted to continued to feel the "air blowing through our hair" we would have kept our previous car........

I had a T-top on my Supercharged MR2, and have the sunroof on the Celica GTS.
The T-top panels needed to be stowed, were heavy (glass), and the plastic sunroof on the Celica leaks air and water. There are times when you miss the open-air nature of the T-top in particular, but not too often. |

I have missed the sunroof in my 00 Civic since the day I got rid of it. It never leaked, although I understand it was added weight.
I also understand the sacrifices to rigidity that would be made with either Targa or T-Tops. Guess I still want one because I've never had it. I've never been into convertibles personally, although Im sure the Miata was a very fun car to drive as well. Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk |

I'd love a targa top, just the added weight would be detrimental.
