So I just got my trans replaced under warranty (Went out at around 44K completely). When I first picked it up, I could wiggle my shifter 2" to either side while it was in gear, which they discovered they didnt install a pin, so thats fixed. However the transmission feels, extremely notchy. Shifting gears kinda makes a crunch sound. Should I replace the fluid asap, or wait XXXX miles and then replace it with the suggested ones in this thread? (If I should wait, how long?) Bought the car used at 22K and she wasn't taken care of. The engine has been solid but my transmission has left me with a loaner for a total of 2 months since I've owned her. I really want to avoid further issues down the line.

transmissions are covered under powertrain warranty (and not the bumper to bumper) right?

Finally did this with Gear 300. First couple cold startups afterward felt a little bit rough shifting into gear, but now it's just buttery smooth. Unbelievable difference.

i changed tran & diff yesterday with Motul 300. my stock fluids were not looking that bad. fluid made improvement on shifting as well as grinding.
I couldnt use my pump to motul gear 300 bottle since cap size was different. it was very difficult just using their tubed-cap. i just squeezing bottle to filled half then use new bottle then combined both bottles then fill again. made all mess on my drive way.

Haha used the same process here. Didn't think it was too bad, but not looking forward to changing out my fluids again this fall especially with the smell.

I just used my normal fluid pump and shoved it into the Motul bottle, lol. I wish manufacturers would just settle on a standard though, pretty annoying to own tools that become useless as soon as somebody wants their packaging to be snazzier.

Redline anything (I tried my alone, mt90) felt like death. Honestly running no fluid would've been better, second gear crunched almost every hit and got to the point I avoided driving

I stepped upto amsoil synchromesh and it was better, still Grindy on second, added 1 quart amsoil mt90 and that improved nothing.

Next up a fresh dose of gear 300 by motul, I remember it being similar to amsoil

Finally pentosin mtf2 and is so far the best. My second never grinds anymore but sometimes difficult or clanky. It's definitely the best of the fluids and becomes butter when you push the car.

I don't know anymore, maybe synchros damaged alittle after redline but I have driven my friends 86 which is older than mine as well as a brand new one and both feel butter in any condition on stock fluid.

*Sigh* try to do something good and you get yourself into a hole

I believe our trans is the biggest variation on this car. Lot units has different feel from each others. My friends used frs that was FIed is butter smooth & feels wonderful with everything stock......

I had grindy 2nd gear with stock fluid & it was so bad. Tried eneos & motul after that.... Motul made life a lot easier for me thou I think it's too smooth that it takes away good amount of feel.

I don't understand. With the spout in the Motul bottle, I was able to change both trans and diff fluid without a pump at all. Just hold the bottle up above the fill hole so it can pour down. Which is good, because I don't have a fluid pump.

I didn't use Motul for the trans, but for the diff I couldn't get the last 1/4 of the bottle out with the built in funnel. With a pump I can get 99% of it out...
