Let's keep it going folks! We can do it! I'm hoping beyond hope that the science vs opinion thing somehow kicks back in based on us shocking this zombie thread back to life!

Hi,

I do have aluminum driveshaft and the 4.88 FD... First was the FI and everything improve (at least in the first 3 gears) then the FD, acceleration improve a lot, (the car feel good in the first 4 gears) but start wine. Then the driveshaft, the car feels like 100lb lighter but it get louder, not all the time just from 85 to 95 mph then it get quiet up to 145 mph (that is the max speed on close course). So if you don't mind the noise you are good to go.

Next in the mod list:
Lighter wheels and brakes as well as 60-100 more WHP.

Note: the car is AT.

I will build a great driveshaft -- and nobody builds driveshafts better than me, believe me --and I'll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great driveshaft on our cars, and I will make the The Driveshaft Shop pay for that driveshaft. Mark my words.

I don't know anything about what you're even talking about with UEL supremacy or UEL supremacists. So I don't know. I don't know -- was there exhaust burble, or what's going on? Because I know nothing about exhaust tuning; I know nothing about UEL supremacists.

that sounds like the argument of a 5 year old, to be honest.

There is no doubt at all and it has been proven time & again that reducing any mass on the car improves acceleration and handling and gas mileage. FACT. Move on.

The only question is how much, which is not really a question because it can be calculated and there's no arguing with numbers. But remember that though this drive shaft is a rotating mass, the width of the mass that is rotating is really small- diminishing the returns. But with wheels, the radius of the rotating mass is relatively large and makes more of a difference. Lightweight wheels will make more of a difference than a drive shaft. There's a calculation to figure out how much of a difference a rotating mass makes by the radius of the rotational axis, it's a known quantity.

But for weight savings, everything you do to reduce car weight adds up. You may not be able to tell a difference in losing a few lbs off the drive shaft, but combined with a bunch of other things to reduce car weight, you're going to notice at some point. the prob with weight saving is that you have to commit to it and it's expensive.

Weight means nothing. EX- Prius is very lightweight and is a dog. HP and torque mean nothing. EX- challenger (regular asssed challenger not a hellcat or anything) is a big fatty and the weakest of the 3 big current V8 muscle cars even though it has the most power and is most expensive. Ratio of weight to engine power means everything. EX- Kawasaki Ninja- only 134HP but also only 600 lbs is one of the highest performing vehicles on the road.

Power:weight=everything

But when it comes to bang for the buck- light weight components are not a good investment for increasing car performance because it costs SO MUCH to do so little. There are free things you can do and cheap things you can do but once you commit to a lightweight car just empty your bank account now because it's not cheap. The drive shaft can be part of that but on its own not combined with other weight savings it's a waste of money. Science and numbers back that up.

This lightweight drive shaft is a great addition to your build ONLY IF you are committed to going lightweight. It's a piece of a puzzle.
