The top ten stolen vehicles in Canada is hilarious!

Most stolen vehicles in Canada:
  1. 2005 Ford F-350
  2. 2006 Ford F-350
  3. 2007 Ford F-350
  4. 2006 Cadillac Escalade
  5. 2003 Ford F-350
  6. 2006 Ford F-250
  7. 2001 Ford F-350
  8. 2004 Ford F-250
  9. 2007 Ford F-250
  10. 2001 Ford F-250
Either old Ford trucks are really easy to start or people leave keys in them all the time.

I lived in the area my whole life

Maple for the most part has been a safe town especially my area where the plaza is located. It was a naive move to keep the car running.

Would I leave the keys in my car in the Jane and finch area or in Scarborough! Absolutely not.

This is a wake up call and lesson for me that crimes can happen anywhere and believe me I got lucky as shit and have learned. I've already gotten shit from co workers snd friends lol

For those saying its s crime of opportunity.. Of course it is. But would you ever be stupid enough to jump in the car and take off? Theft is theft. What if my girlfriend or a kid was in the car? My tints are dark there's no way they could have peaked in. There's no defense for me but at the end of the day it was shit luck to have it stolen and better luck to have it found.

I just got s call from forensics. 2 more hours until the check is completed. I was told 3 days - a week by TPS because they said forensics are usually backed up. Again I'm lucky they weren't and I get the car back tonight

What I am doing as per insurance is getting my ride towed to a mechanic directly from the pound and having them do a complete diagnostic and check on the vehicle. That way there's no liability if they tampered with the car. Highly unlikely but it's something that looks good on my part for the insurance to see I at least did that.

I guess a good summary of my view is "I worked for it so if you are going to steal it from me you are bloody well going to have to work at it as well." I refuse to gift wrap my stuff and hand it to thieves.
I don't mean to come across as saying you are entitled to leave stuff out and to not expect anyone will take it. If you do that, absolutely you should not be stunned/ shocked/ surprised that it is now gone. To the point of insurance, yes. I certainly agree that thefts and break-ins contribute to higher premiums and in this situation it is likely that had he turned off his car this would have never happened.

Most of us can't sat we completely trust the area we live and expect that the people there will always do right by us. To feel that kind of optimism I can see how in your mind you wouldn't think twice, and it is a shame that you had to learn that kind of lesson.

At least you got your car back in one piece. So there is that. Buy some pepper spray and start looking over your shoulder more and maybe know how to throw a strong right-hook, I guess.

I know that my insurance policy is very clear that if I leave my car unattended with the keys in it then I am not covered for theft. If it was I would have a new car every year!
I actually been following this post, but I had this douchebag in his mustang I think 2009-2011 it was brand new at the time. Anyways he left his car on and walked away, and I mean like yo he walked like AWAY like half way across the school parking lot to talk to some chicks. Anyways me being the asshole I was in high school I got in his car and drove off with him running after me LOL.

I totally embarrassed him I finally gave him his car back after I wore him out, I told him "Thanks for the ride" as I throw his keys back at him lol I bet that's the last time he'll ever leave his car running(;

But yes that was an opportunity right there that even I COULD NOT RESISTED.

Thank you! These were my main sticking points and maybe your experience will save somebody else the problems when they think twice of leaving the car running in what they think is a "safe" area.

At least yours turned out to have a happy ending instead of a smashed and burnt wreck someplace.

I'm gonna reprogram my key and also (fail safe) look into putting in a tracker should something like this ever happen again. (Obviously without making the same mistake again)

Anyone know how much they cost ?

Get a prepaid sim with a data plan and stick in an old smartphone you don't use anymore. Keep it in the glove box and charge it with USB using your glovebox port. Then you can use Google locate and have a cell number for cops to triangulate.

It is considered a tort of gross negligence and you are likely to be found liable for any personal or property damage caused by the joyrider. Some jurisdictions have specific criminal rules about leaving running vehicles, I don't think the CVC has a specific section addressing this scenario though.

Tortfeasors gonna tort...

Then my insurance broker is full of shit. Told him the whole story down to the T and he said theft is theft. Send over police occurrence # and that I would be covered.

The only thing is though with Wawanesa I believe they would sky rocket my premium since it is a form of gross negligence. I did look into their policies and it seems likely that this is how they do things. Which in the end is the same shit. Again, unless I'm being given false info.

They'll need to test drive it extensively to make sure there's no evidence that only appears while the car is in motion.

It has nothing to do with theft. If someone steals your car, pushing the panic button wouldn't help, because your car is gone.

The "panic button" is on North American keys to help people find their cars when they forget where they parked. When those were a relatively new feature, there used to be television commercials showing people finding their cars that way.

LOL. The only reason cops would start ticketing people for that is for additional revenue. The weight of government in California requires taxation wherever they can find a vein to tap.
