How do I know. But if even Hyundai has been making a DCT since at least 2011 (for non-turbo Veloster, Turbo got it too but later), I'd guess Toyota is capable of designing and producing one as well. They would not do it for FR-S alone, but they might want to sell it in other cars, like Lexus coupes.

Just as an aside, the hyundai DCT is a pile of shit. What a miserable powertrain.

I'm sure Toyota could design one, but is there a budget DCT that isn't a hot mess transitioning between stationary and moving? Even the excellent shifting GTI unit is sloppy there.

The only thing you can be sure of is a price increase.

Lexus didn't even give the LFA a DCT.

Actually they're getting more tame. You wouldn't believe that shit that was being tossed in 2012. That was when speculating a 2.5 liter AWD twin-turbo hybrid trim Porsche-killer for under 40k wasn't a cliché.

I own a earlier generation VW group DCT (2008 A3) and it is actually very smooth coming from a stop. The only time where it isn't as smooth is the downshift into 1st. Even then it is still very smooth and doesn't bug me at all. Amazing transmission for a daily driver.

Toyota should keep the FR-S as the base model and offer the 86-spec as well. To really annoy people, I'd add the parts option to build an RS. Lots of butthurt. When the base price hit's 30K, the car will be done.

Would push the value of the used ones up nicely though!

Got a feeling Toyota isn't allowed to like out do Subaru on their Interior, for example an 86 has to have luxuries less than or Equal to, unless it's a special edition to a Limited BRZ. So if Toyota has a 30K version, You'll probably have a 32K version for Subaru, and you're prolly paying for that Pleiades Badge.

Note The interior is already seen as horrible, for people who want an option for a nice interior. Lots of us might not care, but the world has moved on for example the New 2016 Civic benchmarks an Audi A3, the new Accord benchmarks the A6, the Miata has a premium feel interior their benchmark was Porsches. The interior of this class of car has now pushed above, what is that to say about the next refreshed 86. Maybe they'll add thicker Knee pad and call it a better interior.

Point is I don't think many people will fret if their are options. Now that it's a Toyota and it's not mono spec, take advantage of it and make something better. Without out doing Subaru (says prolly accounting and other business partner politicians)

I've always considered Subaru's to be "cheap" cars, regardless of how much you can spend on one off the lot. Toyota is not going to do anything to take the the Toyota FRGT86-S out of the price-driven market niche it sits in.

Added: I wonder how they are going to market the thing? It's now a Toyota, and they are not going to want to be seen selling a cheap-ass little sports car car to middle-agers like all the rest of the line-up is aimed at. They might have to up-scale it to sell it as a Toyota.

I don't like it but... ya... That 2nd gen oem wheel is killer.
I saw this originally posted on FT86ClubVancouver but the full link that I saw had couple of closer up photos. Unfortunately I am unable to relocate the photos. If anyone can post them that would be awesome.

Photo Shopped speculative version is still a Photo Shopped speculative version no matter how good the rep of the magazine or how many places it pops up.

There have been trim levels around the world that matched or exceeded the Subaru version since day one. All that was holding them back here was the Scion monospec deal. Over here we think of the BRZ as the "luxury" version just because we only had the FRS to compare it to. I doubt there is any deal that one is supposed to stay higher level than the other we just perceived it that way. The top trim in some of the other countries will blow your socks off but so will the prices! All that cool shit ain't free.

This would be a great way to start with a fresh slate with the Toyota badge on it and offer a base with no trim options but make it ala carte. This way the customer can make their own trim options. The problem is installation backups at the dealer. That would be something the dealers won't go for.
