I remember the an engineer for the new LC500 defended their 10-speed auto over a DCT because the shifts were not significantly faster and would lose the smoothness a automatic has over a DCT. However that's for a Lexus which has different design parameters, but I would guess they will just keep the same 6-speed unit.

I think a DCT also will add some weight, it might upset the balance. Than again I'm not sure how much a Unit of DCT weight in comparison to an Automatic, a good guess might be the VW golf's DCT.

Normally this would be true. But since this is also a rebranding as the Toyota FRS or whatever its being called here in NA. Theres a good chance there will be a sort of auto show reveal for it.

It is not a "rebranding" just a badge change. Been the same brand everywhere else in the world and it is not the earth shaking thing that the US seems to think it is.
It is not new nor exciting and it cost so much to put cars in those shows that a simple rebadge is not going to be worth it. "Look USA this is the spanking new badge that the rest of the world has always used" does not get press and that is what they are after.

To us and the people on this forum that might be true. But most of the people I have seen really have no idea that Scion FRS is a Toyota GT 86 ( Heck most people probably dont even know wtf Scion is ). So the fact that its coming under a mainstream brand like Toyota is pretty big , at least in the eyes of the non-enthusiasts.

Also wait What do you mean it cost so much to put the cars in the show? I see the FRS/BRZ at these autoshow all the time. Tiny little spotlight and some dude giving a press reveal costs that much more?

That is sort of the issue. The general public do not care if it was Scion or Toyota. Against the rest of the cars at the New York show the fact it changed won't even qualify as a side note.

When was the last time that Toyota/Subaru put a twin in any of the big shows? Not talking modded cars that some parts suppliers will show to sell their wares but just a normal car. Sure some smaller shows may feature it but space at the big ones (Detroit, New York, and LA mostly) cost tens of thousands of dollars a square foot for the companies with displays. These shows are for concepts, new releases and major changes not just because a badge changed.

Won't be long before we will see who is right though and I will eat my words if I am wrong.

"Most people" don't know shit about cars. I've spoken to people who don't even realize Subaru and Mazda are anything to write home about, literally classing it next to other tiny Japanese manufacturers like Mitsubishi and Suzuki, probably even Hyundai/Kia although they've been making huge gains I wouldn't be surprised if you grabbed 100 Americans and on name brand recognition alone would pick a new Hyundai over a new Subaru.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but is there any chance toyota would do multi trims (not just special editions) with the FRS like how they have the BRZ limited? Would love to be able to get a FRS without bending over backwards to get the push start, HIDs, and alcantara...

It's possible, but unlikely.

In all likelihood, the only thing changing with this being a Toyota now, is the manufacturer's badge on the front bumper, trunk, steering wheel and stereo

SPECULATION ALERT!!!!!
It think that not only is it possible but it is likely. Not for the 17s maybe but moving forward from there. The whole catch there is that those trim options are going to cost you.
Just go look at the price jumps (not the actual prices they are not transferable) on the trim levels in the UK. The base, which is basically the FRS we know, is substantially less expensive then the other trim levels. We will probably get a better choice since mono spec is purely a Scion thing but we are going to pay dearly for those options. People can complain all they want about Scion's single spec and pure price policies but they kept the prices low.

Fair point. I guess at the end of the day, doesn't really matter. Especially since I wouldn't be trading up for a high spec FRS anyhow. I guess we will see what the price differences are if (when) it happens. I think it would be wise of Toyota to continue doing these RS editions though. That would be the only way to get me to trade up, and I'm sure many people would think the same

I get what you mean, if only they made more white monograms, i wouldnt mind swinging for a RS1 too, but they are hard to come by.

It may but it won't be the same price they are now.
