The diff is a fairly complex assembly of gears. If something isn't adjusted right when it is assembled the gears make noise and will wear prematurely.

Update:

Had my car at Subaru and they took it out to try and replicate the noise but were unable to but noted that i had a loud aftermarket exhaust ofcourse. I had sent them a sound recording before hand that you could clearly hear the noise between 68 to 72 MPH. My plan is after talking with them is to take someone out hopefully this Saturday and have them hear the noise.

I have this issue at 68-71mph on my new 2016 as well, since day 1. My solution to the problem is to not linger at those speeds. Secondary solution is to turn up the volume on my stereo. It's worked well for the past 5000 miles. I wouldn't let the dealership anywhere near my differential unless I had no other option. End up with some scrub tech working on it and you'll be in for worse trouble down the road instead of a little noise.

Yes any other time i would not trust a tech to work on something like that but being that i know the one at the dealership and he also told me that they would not be working on the diff itself they would change it out for an entirely different one.

If you know the person working on your car that makes a huge difference, especially at a dealership.

Scheduled this Saturday morning first thing to drive a mechanic in the car and point out the noise to them so see how that goes.

If you have stock exhaust, and add Whiteline bushing inserts to the trans, differential and subframe, this noise will increase quite noticeably as a high pitch whistle right around 69-73mph for me. I never noticed it before the bushing inserts. No whistle at 35mph, but slight vibration from the bushings. Definitely coming from differential though. speed dependent and not throttle input. Just my personal experience.
