My dad used to be a Mechanic for Chrysler and is now an engineer for them but all his tools are snap on a whole like 72" tool box full including specialty tools. If you work for a corporation you can get a slight discount also the lifetime warranty is a big sell for some people. Many times snap-on will just send us a new one (next day shipping I might add) before we even ship the old one back and sometimes they don't even want the old one back. Not that this happens often maybe 10 times top in the 25+ years of owning some of these tools. Some people won't notice the difference just like some people settle on driving a lower end car and really don't care what they drive the just want to get the job done which in that case is drive from A to B where people like us buy a very niche vehicle because to us its not about getting to A or B or C its about the journey. In some ways it applies to tool but the difference is much smaller

From my youtube experience watching videos where mechanics compare them, a couple of things; some already mentioned:

1) Feel in hand, the snap-on and other tools are designed to be held at more angles, etc.
2) Same tool is generally 'longer', where you might get 8" stem on an off-brand, you'll get 10" on the nice tool. Tons more leverage.
3) Teeth on ratches and exactness of them. Ratchets have X teeth and X accuracy; so sometimes you'll be under the hood with a cheap ratchet and in the inch of travel you have, it doesn't 'click'. The snap on will click, click, click and you can ratchet in that tighter space.
4) accuracy can be worlds off; if you compare a 12mm of the brands, you will see a significant difference in both the average size and the the distribution / margin of error on size.

Others have mentioned warranty, etc; so I won't repeat. I don't have any nice tools myself; but if I were doing engines all day, it'd be a requirement.

Along with the tool truck coming to you. When you are in a pinch having to run out for tools is a PITA.

Very well said. And just cause of this, I'm getting a nice snap-on ratchet from the gift card my boss gave us for chirstmas.

You must not be looking at the same premium tool used market as I am... A decent chunk of cash, sure.

Retirement?

Hell I'm retired and I don't have any money and didn't even sell any of my tools. I just don't want to work anymore so I choose not to.

That is the definition of retirement. Not there yet, but I can see it from where I am now!

This man is on point! Everytime I think I'll quite wrenching, sell my tools and get a carrear change I look at the values on craigslist. That $7k tool box $800-1100.

I use craftsman because the nearest place to replace them is usually no more than a few miles away. For me 2 miles (Ace hardware is a craftsman dealer).

For generic handtools, or one time use, I do Harbor Freight.
I dont get my hopes up and HF has done great for me.

Buying Snap on is like buying Ray-Bans when the chinese knock-offs for $5 are essentially indistinguishable.
