This extended into the 80's and 90's as well. I was reminded this time this past weekend when driving down I-75 in Florida. One of the buildings was the Mark III factory where a lot of those custom vans were built. Place was all boarded up. Very sad...

The real true vans were the 70's version though. Mostly "home grown" with great airbrushing on the sides, and shag carpet in every crevice. Oh those were the days!

I actually like the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire and want either of them (if not both, preferably the Vellfire) to be brought here to the states. I don't think they should be under the Scion badge though; I really doubt a youth looking for a Scion wants a minivan.

scion should be killed, the people that buy scion are actually older than the people that buy toyota's. It was a dumb idea because toyota wanted to play at the you are too stupid to negotiate pricing model.

I think AIDS killed the shag waggon idea. If this van's a rockin...

I know lots of parents with minivans. I can't stand them. Fucking penalty box of driving. Even worse than a Forester.

I like Jalopink but they have said some serious questionable things in the past.

I read a popular ("popular" as in for the masses not something that was highly regarded by a lot of people) article that suggested that for many young people cars aren't a necessity like they used to be for older folk. That is, it used to be if one wanted to go and hang out with friends one had to get in one's car and go somewhere. If you wanted to see something in the next town you had to travel. Cars were a means of freedom. Now-a-days one just gets on FaceBook or goes watching YouTube clips.
I appreciate this is a generalisation and doesn't apply to everybody but there might an element of truth there.

If Scion now wants to sell mainstream vehicles, fine. But the entire fan base that they amassed for a certain type of vehicle (like the xB) AND do marketing designed for, isn't going to make them happy. I will admit a lot of mainstream Scion fans complain about the most pointless stuff ("put a turbo on the tC!!! put a turbo on the iM!!! the iA has no power and why does it look like a mazda!? the frs was a terrible supra replacement it only has 200hp!!!")
Also what I am curious about is why the Scion iA is a Scion is the US, but it's the Toyota Yaris Sedan here in Canada.

This is actually very insightful in my families case and I never really thought about it before. Neither of my kids (34 and 32 years old) drive and never had any interest in doing so. They both were very popular in school and such ( son was prom king in high school) and it baffled me how that was even possible. Even though they were at the cutting edge of social media they were certainly using it and did not need to travel or tie up a phone to communicate. Back in my day if you didn't have a car your social life was restricted to people in your immediate area or those that did drive. To use the phone you were tied to one spot in one room so conversations were usually brief and to the point.
I always figured that I somehow turned them off cars or driving due too my passion for both but now have a whole new perspective on the subject. I will have to look for this article or something like it.

I do not understand the marketing department of some large organisations.
There is a camera on the way that I am interested in. It has been officially announced by the manufacturer but not yet released. There are five (!!!) different model numbers for the same camera depending on which part of the world you are buying it in.

This one is easy. Scion has only been in Canada since 2010. Many areas were not even expected the o receive dealers until 2012. Since they wanted the car here sooner they released it as a Yaris.
Hard to believe but we are not part of the US and there is a long history of the same cars being released under different names or even brands here.

Although my latest crazy fantasy is a quick 80's luxury sedan so the proposed OG would get at least a test drive out of me... But that's mostly because I can't afford quick little Euro 60-70's sedans and the 90's got to bloated.
I normally enjoy most of the articles on Jalopnik, but I will admit that the "Blizzapalooza" nonsense they've hard-linked to the front page today reminds me way too much of the shit hole that weather.com has become.
