Scion Sucks because We're All Cowards - Jalopnik

An interesting read over at Jalopnik, about one blogger's opinion how to make Scion relevant here in the US again. Thoughts?

The goal here would be to target the minivan not to families (who may buy it anyway) but to that coveted young buyer, and pitch it as a sort of mobile party/fun/debauchery room

So what is the potential North America market of young buyers who want to buy a (presumably second or third) vehicle to be used as a mobile party room? 50 people?

When reading this, keep in mind that Torch is the most beautifully insane contributor to Jalopnik. Some other examples of his work, which should rarely be taken seriously despite the high level of technical detail:

I don't think they should have dropped the XB. They should have left the previous gen like it was, boxy, and roomy. The new discontinued one is neither of those things. I loved our XB but the one and only problem it had would have cost us more than the whole car was worth. I have no regrets buying another scion. I know a bigger entity stands behind it in the form of Toyota. However I woulda bought the FRS anyway even if it were a honda

I am aghast at his selection of cars for the Proposed Line-Up. Either I am seriously out of touch with what automobile enthusiast and young buyers want or he is.

The FJ cruiser could've been a good candidate for Scion, if it was scaled back to a Jeep renegade proportion... The Land cruiser, not so much

The oG is freakin legit. But this article is all basically saying they need to bring semi quirky cars like the S-FR to the US

My dad's xB is parked outside. He'd drive it more, but it's a deathtrap in side impact. Daihatsu continued making a second gen of the car, the Materia, but it never came to America, and they softened the styling too much. It wouldn't have sold even if it came to the US. It went from lovably ugly to just ugly.

The FR-S is our second Scion. We've owned Scions continuously since 2004. Other than the FR-S, there's nothing there for us right now.

Pretty well from what I understand. I think the Cube is a flop, though.

This has already happened once in automotive history. The late 70s early 80s saw the highly popular custom van market targeted at young people for just those reasons. The manufactures jumped all over that craze and started putting out all sorts of factory made "shaggin' waggin's". Some of those vans were spectacular and can bring in big bucks today (if you could find them).

OK. I guess I am too young to remember that and too old to imagine what "young buyers" would want today...

Hell vans were so hot they even made panel versions of the Pinto and Vega to try to grab part of that market.

It's clickbait, crazy ideas to generate ad revenue and comments.

I know exactly one guy with a van (coincidentally also an 86) born in the last three decades, I don't think you're out of touch, as noted above Torch (the author) is a fringe guy.

Although my latest crazy fantasy is a quick 80's luxury sedan so the proposed OG would get at least a test drive out of me... But that's mostly because I can't afford quick little Euro 60-70's sedans and the 90's got to bloated.
