Someone on another forum believes the BMW & Toyota car could be a mid engine possibly previewed by the M1 and hybrid MR-2 concepts. It would make sense because both companies are missing a NSX and R8 competitor.

The Next Supra is the FT-1 concept... so it will look more like the original car then first thought. Not the the FT-1 concept looks like the original Supra, but the lay out is front engine, rear wheel drive hatch back. So the over all design is Supra like. With any concept it is the over all design not so much the little details you have to look at that makes the "new" car. A lot of what was in the concept of the FRS/BRZ was carried over to the production vehicle. Oh and for the peeps that are talking about price, the Supra was crazy expensive for its time (for the demographic it was most popular with). I would say price the new Supra around the Nissan GTR, (about $80k) but make sure it has performance specs on par with it.

Oh and they are working on a $16k (1.5-litre hybrid set-up) vehicle to slot in under the FRS, so I am thinking something to compete against the Honda CR-Z (CRX replacement). "After a mandate from Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda calling for “cars that touch the heart”". Looks like the success of the FRS/GT86/BRZ, has Toyota scrambling to bring out "sports" cars.

Spy photographers have braved temperatures of -13° Fahrenheit to bring us the first pictures of the highly-anticipated BMW Z5.

Snapped in Scandinavia, the heavily camouflaged prototype gives us our first glimpse at the new Z4 successor. Unfortunately, there isn't much to see but the model will retain classic roadster styling cues including a long hood and a wide grille. The prototype also has a dual exhaust system and a retractable soft top.

BMW hasn't had much to say about the model lately but the car is being jointly developed with Toyota. Despite sharing the same platform, the Z5 and the Toyota variant will have little in common as both are slated to have unique styling inside and out.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but are expected to include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a turbocharged six-cylinder. There have also been rumors about a hybrid and a high-performance M variant which could have up to 425 horsepower.

The BMW Z5 is still in the early stages of testing but it is believed the production model could be unveiled as early as next year.

The Z4 roadster is the oldest model in BMW’s lineup, and these spy photos prove that its replacement is well on its way. Expected to be called the BMW Z5, this next-generation droptop ushers in some big changes for the sports car. The new model will ride on a new rear-drive platform also set to underpin an upcoming Toyota sports car.

Though the prototype’s heavy camouflage doesn’t give away too much about the Z5’s styling, the most notable change we can see is the car’s softtop. Compared to the outgoing Z4’s complex retractable hardtop, this new convertible roof, combined with a possible use of carbon-fiber and aluminum in the body, should result in a lighter curb weight for the new roadster; the current Z4 weighs between 3,263-3,549 lb depending on engine choice.

Our European correspondent Georg Kacher says that the new Z5 will continue to offer a turbo-four as the standard engine. A higher-output version of this four-cylinder will also be offered as an upgrade, along with a turbocharged inline-six for a possible M version.

The BMW Z5 prototype’s shorter hood also corroborates our previous report that the car’s new underpinnings would have more of a front-mid-engine bias. A joint collaboration between BMW and Toyota, the new platform has been in development for a few years now. Along with the BMW Z5, the chassis will also be used for a spiritual successor to the Toyota Supra. The latest rumors about that car suggest that it will be a hardtop coupe, use a hybrid drivetrain, and carry styling cues from the wild Toyota FT-1 concept first shown in 2014.

The BMW Z5 is currently slated to arrive in time for the 2018 model year, so look for more details to come over the next few months on this new BMW sports car.

We give you a first look at the long rumored BMW Z5, the successor to the current Z4 Roadster.

The Z5 rides on a platform which is being co-developed by BMW and Toyota. Toyota is also expected to build its own sports car based on the joint platform.

The Z5 is supposed to spearhead a revival of the Z model lineup which will feature more dynamically impressive and exciting roadsters. The return to a soft-top as seen on this prototype represents a focus on lighter weight, which in addition to the car's mix of lightweight composite construction, should see the Z5 come in at a lighter weight and provide better performance than the Z4.

The future Z lineup is rumored to also including a Z3 and a Z1 roadster. The Z3 will share the Z5's modular RWD platform and the Z1 will be based on BMW's UKL FWD/AWD platform.

The Toyota FT1 and BMW Z5 are a result of the joint project between Toyota and BMW.

The A80 Supra everyone knows and loves was about 3300 lbs. I'd be surprised if this new FT-1 inspired model is lighter or even the same given that the M4 GTS is also 3300lbs but costs $134,000. The FT-1 Supra will probably debut at 3500-3600 lbs. and 350-420 bhp at about $60k.
