Where I work requires me to make a u-turn at the light and head back on a 2-lane road the other direction for a quarter mile or so. I usually do most of my fun at this u-turn because there is so much room and no fear of hitting anyone else. Well, it was wet and I knew if you don't do things just right, even with the 'VSC' mode on, the cars stops all of your fun. So I turned off all the systems for the first time. I go around this corner and have it in 2nd. I swing around and goose it a bit but don't let off the gas.
Well, my asshole puckered a little because the car swung right, I counter steered, then it came back slowly and I began drifting into the left lane, then it started to come back to the right. I let off the gas at that point because I was out of my league. The car settled down immediately. Had I been in a 370, GT, or SS I probably would have spun off into the ditch. So I credit the car for making me look a bit like a hero. What causes the drivetrain to shake so horrendously when the tires slip in the rain? I switched off traction control this morning and gunned it from the light and my god, the way the shiftier was banging around scared the shit out of me. It is just that the transmission/ engine mounts are too soft? I think what works so well is the fact the car does communicate very well. When the car begins to slide even a little, you feel it immediately in the wheel and your butt. I just wish the VSC button gave a little more wiggle room. I am kind of afraid to go full-off, but hate how it cuts in so abruptly for what I think is no good reason. |

Sounds like wheelhop (aka axle wrap), and it can break stuff if you don't get off the throttle when it happens. It is usually caused by flex in the drivetrain/rear suspension. Soft bushings at the suspension mounting points and in the rear control arms is one of the biggest causes. Control arm flex will also do it. Aftermarket control arms will usually stop it. Poly bushings or even just "boxing" the stock control arms will usually be a big help at a lower cost...

Today was also the first day I drove my 86 in heavy rain. This is my first RWD and I'm still very cautious driving it in the wet. Car definitely has a playful character.

That being the first RWD you've had, yea you need to be careful. It's one of many I've had and I've had some pretty powerful ones too. You need to learn wet driving control before you go all guts
