Running UEL untuned?
Hello all,
I feel this has been somewhat talked about, (yes I searched), but I would like to get someones opinion who has credibility. I received a Gruppe-S header and am anxious to install it, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately I don't have money to tune it until I sell a few parts, and so I was wondering how harmful would it be to run the UEL without a tune for about a month or so? I wouldnt beat on it, rather just enjoy the new sounds since the AFR's wont be ideal. Then tune and have lots of fun when I can. Anyway, I'm sure I'll get somewhat roasted, but hell, Im excited like anyone would be. Thanks!

Will it run, yes. Is it the correct thing to do, no. Are you getting your money's worth from your header, no. Best off containing your excitement however long it takes to save up for a tune. Why not look after your car.

One of the oldest FRS' out there, (first one in VA might I add), is at ~115k miles, 60k of them w/ an untuned UEL. Why? no idea but he's my buddy so I have to accept him lol.
No harm to do it. Won't get the 'performance' aspect of the header until it's tuned, however. And if you CEL comes on, say bye-bye to cruise control. Won't work until you clear the codes.

It will be fine
Your only issue will likely be cel code P0420 comming on every few hundred miles (cat efficiency) and cruise control will be disable if that code ective just clear it with obd scaner of android torque app . You can reset cel code by removing battery terminal but that will reset ecu and you will likey notice the thrttle is a bit laggy till ecu relears a few parameters. The headers wont upset afr unless you fitt them incorrectly and have air leaks. Intake changes upset afr due maf sensor readings can be different. Tune will disable p0420 cel code permanetly and optimise valve timing fueling and ignition timing for best performance. |

Spend that money on an OFT or equivalent before you get the header, is what I would do (what I did).

In all, thanks to those who replied. I will most likely install them soon if I can find the time between studying and finals! Appreciate it all! Mods, I found my answer so thread can be closed.

Then go to your tuner, pull the stock rom off, disable p0420 then reflash. Takes a whole 10 min.

Upstream is for closed-loop metering. ECU compares downstream conditions with upstream to determine cat efficiency.
