I promised myself I would drive like my mom before I was blessed to receive such a great car from my parents. This car is almost too much fun, and it took two wipe outs, a narrow lane s-drift (slide) into a parking lot, and 2 uncontrollable drifts within the first 2 months to understand (99.5%) how this car handles in dry and wet weather (never got a scratch).

I'm not saying you aren't ready for such a car, just that if you ever get the itch to do something irresponsible, make sure you have a ton of space and you can clearly see that no one is within a good 20 seconds of where you are. Better yet, take it to the track.
Good advice. I think better advice would be to take it to the track altogether.

am I the only one that has never drifted this car (either on purpose or not)? I have spun out two times on the track though, but those were the only times I lost control of my car. everyone talks about drifting and hooning around, but am I too responsible to own this car?

Also, definitely try and drive something else. This car is fun and has enough power for a first sports car, but try and see if you want more power. I only ask that if you do get something with more power, don't do anything stupid.
I can vouch for this.. after my crash, all i had were a few cuts from the glass and a little bit of whiplash. Even then, all of them healed up in 2 weeks.

Just do your research first.

Inherently RWD cars have more to them and are "harder" to drive hence less safe under extreme situations, but since you said you're not planning to drive irresponsibly, it's literally going to be the same as any other Toyota or Subaru. Reliable and cheap to maintain. However, take note that while this car has a MPG only slightly lower than a Corolla or Civic, it uses premium so running cost will be around 1.5x one of the former.

Also, make sure you don't buy the car for cosmetic reasons alone. While cosmetic reasons can be a consideration, don't make it the ONLY factor. If you treat a car as a means to get from A to B, this car is not for you. It's actually extremely expensive for the amount of comfort and efficiency for getting to a place. It's all about the driving feel and dynamic. If you don't understand or care for that, this is not the car for you. I also kind of get the feeling you might not like it since driving a sports car on public roads is all about being able to drive a bit irresponsibly but still feel in perfect control.

To make sure, just go drive it and drive a luxury sedan like a lexus or a bmw and see what you prefer more. If you do prefer the driving feel that a sports car can give you, then do what @Tcoat said and drive all those other cars.

To me it makes jack shit what your parents get you. Whether you get $1k or $30k you are not making the payments, so it means jack shit. Be glad your getting a car.
Why so hostile? I am glad that I am getting a car, but there are a lot of options and I want a car that is really fun to drive but is also safe. I believe that the BRZ is a perfect candidate for that seeing as everything I read about it says "fun even at low speeds" which is exactly what I want whilst also being safe .

It really depends on what kind of car you're looking for. I'm around the same age as you, and I'm know for sure the friends I talk to who are into cars, they always talk about turbo-charging like its the best thing ever invented (albeit I doubt they know how turbo's even work). That said, test drive! Do research on the cars you may be interested in, cross shop, talk to owners. If you have your heart set on a twin, absolutely go for it! Personally if it was me and if I had a choice on what my first car would be, I'd look into a used Miata since they're pretty cheap, fun, easy to learn and of course...

The way my father sees it is that due to my academic performance I'm eligible for many scholarships, and since he isn't having to pay nearly as much for my college education (my tuition is looking to be completely free), he can splurge a little bit more on my first car. So it's not as though I'm just some sh*thead kid who's rich or something lol.

That being said I still realize it's an amazing first car and trust me I've thanked my dad up and down for letting me get the car haha.

It's good to go with a color that you like the best and will definitely like for a long time. Not saying that HyperBlue is a horrible color though.

what's stopping you from getting the 2016? what is your dad's budget? I would say to get a car that you like (since it's most likely going to be a keeper) instead of settling for your 2nd choice. that is, if you do decide to get a relatively new car for your first car

plus the 2015+ have a few changes from the previous years

I mean I could get it but I feel bad asking for a car that's like $5000 more expensive than a 2013 one simply because I want a cooler color ya know?

you also get the sharkfin, backup camera, better keyfob, different head unit, and a few more changes

but if you don't care for those, then the model years probably won't matter much to you
