I mean under what circumstances could an auto box cease to function and the dealer say it is a wear item and deny coverage for it?

Auto transmissions classify as covered warranty components within the Drivetrain portion, because of it not being manually engaged by the driver. Such as if the auto transmission does not engage into gear correctly, or harsh engagement, clutch noises, smells. All of those components are covered with it being a Auto Transmission. You may ask 'Why?', because of it not being engaged manually.

I know he's an expert, cause he uses all caps for emphasis. He must be like a jedi of stick shift or something.

I've been driving manual for 17 years and my FR-S got its throw out bearing replaced under warranty. The car was less than 3 years old and had less than 30k miles at that time. Any other manual cars I had before had no problem with clutch. The one I drove the most had 65k miles mostly city through 6 years of ownership. If it's not the car and is the driver, then at least that car with 65k miles should have had the problem with throw out bearing.

I just wonder if its a defect since some people are already at 100k with no issues.

I had mine replaced at 19k miles because the sound popped up. Since replacing it, I swear the clutch feels better and it doesn't have a sound anymore 3k miles later.
