Just checked mine, USDM red, have had them for about 2 years now without any issues other than the crappy relay. No melting here.

does anyone think that putting some vinyl on the top part of the headlight will stop this melting? and would it even look good? lol

thats usually as far as the melting goes for the toms. buddyclubs on the other end (might or might not) warp slowly until the whole piece falls. It just comes down to personality. will it bug you or not.

Okay update. received my "replacements" today. notice the box was quite small. opened it up. they only sent me the left side. my pictures clearly showed it was both side and i never mentioned it being a specific side. This is just sad. On another note they sent me a pair with old style logo i mentioned in my other thread. Pics below

Out of curiosity, what's the "new" style logo?

Edit: nvm, I found your old posts. =P

I really wonder what's causing it. the location seems to be too consistent to be just focused sunlight. what's directly inside that might cause that?
I've had my clear Tom's going on two years now and the driver side light shows the melting, but it's smaller than the above pics. no melting on the passenger side that i can see. the melting's stayed the same size and hasn't grown any larger.

Very likely that the Clears and Reds are made out of a different material... I somehow doubt that the sun is the culprit...

Someone should vinyl that area in question on a brand new set of clears and see the results after a week... to find out once and for all.

It has to be the sun. These tailights can sit in their boxes for months waiting for someone to buy them or outside their boxes on display inside a room. It isnt until they are installed and exposed to sun that they start to melt

I think the LED components are melting that area... Like I said, it is possible that the shield material above the LEDs are different from the RED Tom's hence the inevitable melting.

Surprised no one's attempted to test out the temps inside when it's powered; could be a hot spot right there (which would explain the consistency)

Or actually hooked up to electricity and turned on. i think the sun is too random of a factor. It looks too concentrated in that one area to be due to the whole housing heating up from the sun (or the sun's rays being focused like a magnifying glass). one of my lights has it, the other doesn't, and both are exposed to the sun just about equally.

I just checked mine, no signs of any melting. I've had my clear USDM Tom's since March 2014. Then again, I've only driven the car 4,000km (2,500 miles) since that time. The car is also garage kept, so no sun exposure.

I'll bring my infrared temp gun the next time I use the car at night and take some readings on the spot where it melts.
