Would it put a smile on my face if I ever got to sit or drive one? Yes.

Would I ever own one? Nope, unless it was dirt cheap which is probably unlikely due to all costs involved.

Once the R34 becomes fully US legal, I'll probably have something else in the garage. (Jag F-Type, Tesla Roadster, etc. )

I remember seeing a couple already imported R34 GTR's a few months back. I can't find the ads anymore, but they were like $55-$70k (Canadian).

Nobody get mad but I just don't get the hype on these. Why so popular when virtually nobody here has even driven one? Just where did the mystic on these come from? (Real questions I don't get it)

They're super popular in Japan and sold as competitors to cars like the RX-7, Lancers, and Imprezas.

Basically, they're a part of the 2000s age of Japanese sports cars, which are all hype for various reasons, so there's a good chance that they're great to drive. Not to mention just on paper the technology of these looks impressive which doesn't matter that "virtually nobody here has ever driven one".

Many reasons.
Fanboys.
Fast and furious.
Gran Turismo (the game)
Inline 6, 4wd, twin turbo. (also came in rwd)
In Japan they call it Godzilla.
It's a Nissan (was the most popular Japanese car brand in japan)
It's a GTR, one of the old ones(60's) won many races and was pretty much unbeaten for a few years in Japan.
We never got it(America), so it is as rare as they come.
and this guy...

I think a lot of it is tied up in the fact that so few people have had a chance to see, let alone drive, one. Add equal parts glorification in video games, lack of availability, and a legendary racing legacy; and you have a car with a mythical history and no way to disprove it. For a lot of people it's become a twin-turbo, AWD personification of a childhood hero.

Edit: After seeing what Swarb wrote, change "video games" to "media." Can't forget movies.

Until the R35 came out there was almost no way to get your hands on a GTR in the states. Combine that with the growing japanese tuner scene in the 90's and 2000's, gran turismo came out for the playstation, the internet was just getting fast enough for 1000hp supra videos to circulate the forums... and hype was born.

There are *maybe* 15 FULLY LEGAL R34 GTRs in the country, these came in through motorex before the company was busted by the feds. +/- a few more under 'show and display'.

I dunno why but this made me chuckle more than it should've. In a good way.

Maybe I'm just a nerd...

They should be legal of O'Canadia.

And you really need to do your research on what is legally allowed in the US.

I do not want to just say you're wrong... but that is the show or display law...

Look up the legal cars elligible to import in my other post.. you'll see that they do allow the r33 skyline.

Going to say this again just to make sure, but you do understand that you can't just import and title R33s, correct? There are required modifications which have to be made to the car in order to make it legal in the US.

I say this because I've worked with an RI and we were thinking about doing this, but after we determined the costs it just wasn't worth it. Better to wait until the car is 25 years old.
