I hand tighten my oil filters. You can break stuff by over tightening.

From the manual
5) Tighten more (approx. 3/4 turn) after the seal rubber contacts the chain cover. When using a torque
wrench, tighten to 14 N·m (1.4 kgf-m, 10.3 ft-lb).
CAUTION:
Do not tighten excessively, or oil may leak

Hmm. I'll have to pay close attention to mine. Just did an oil change a couple days ago and this is the third K&N HP1004 filter I've thrown on. When I took the last one off, quite a bit of oil spilled out, but I was thinking I just didn't let it drain enough (waited about 10-15 minutes). Haven't had any issues with oil leaking out during driving though.

Thanks for the heads up!

Been running Greddy filters since that mishap with the K&N. Hasn't happened since, and I haven't needed to wrench that down like a monkey either.

Changed my oil yesterday using a K&N 1004. Drove about 5 miles and smelled quite a bit of oil burning. Opened up the hood and the drivers side was covered

I tend to either use OEM filters or NAPA products on all of my cars. I'm having a hard time picturing what is going on in this case as the FA20 filter screws down and the gasket on the filter has a nice flat surface to seal up against. Is it possible that there is a defect between the filter gasket and the filter itself?

I've used Mobil and OEM since, no issues.

I think it was a defect on the rubber o-ring gasket on the bottom of the filter. While they are normally reddish, when I inspected my bad one a section was gray colored and a bit frayed. My guess is maybe poor quality rubber and the pressure and heat from the circulating oil is causing it to fail way early.
