K&N Oil Filter Problems

I did an oil change on my car at work the other day and I usually use mobile 1 and a mobile filter except the store I got oil from didn't have the mobile filter so they gave me a K&N instead. So I change the oil and back out the car, I didn't notice anything driving home that day but driving to work in the morning I smelled a faint oil smell which got really strong by the time I got to work about 6 miles, so I pull the car in and open the hood and found oil sprayed all over the driver side of the engine bay around the filter. I double checked the filter and it was tight and no double gasket, so I call the parts store and they sent me another, I put it on and let the car run in the shop for about 15 minutes when I notice oil coming out of it again. At this point I just called and got a mobile filter sent down and when comparing them I noticed shape of the bottom of the K&N didn't match up with the mobile, I swapped them and haven't had any issues since. So take this as a warning to stay away from K&N oil filters. And before someone says installation error I'm currently a service manager and was an ase certified tech for about 4 years before and have never once had an oil filter leak.

Maybe it's a bad batch.

It's possible but, the first filter they had on the shelf and the box looked a little old and the second one they had to order in from their warehouse and looked like a much newer box. I spoke with the commercial account manager at the store and we was going to contact K&N about it and send them both filters.

Which part number?

I've been running an HP-1004 for the last 4K miles with no problems... sounds like a bad batch or something. Was it spraying/leaking from the seal or the side of the can

It was the 1004 and it was leaking from the seal. It took about 15 min of idling and it filled the rim around the filter and was pouring over with the second filter. The first one leaked about 1/2 quart all over the driver side and onto the manifold and splash shield.

I just did an oil change on Saturday and used a K&N filter. Drove to work and back (60 miles) with no issues.

I had this problem with a K&N filter as well. I had to tighten it down extremely hard (just short of OEM tight). I'm not going to be using this filter brand again on this car.

No problems with the one that I ran on my BRZ that I installed at the first oil change in June of 2013. Replaced it with a Bosch at the 2nd oil change though (currently on the car).

Just wanted to add to this thread... Changed my oil a couple month back using the KnN HP-1004 and though not as drastic, i have had the filter leak into the filter bucket. At first i thought it was just residual from when i changed the oil so i cleaned it up and drove it around for a day and the oil came back. Changed out my filter to M1 and no more issues.

after lurking http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ I've decided to go with motorcraft filters. They seem to be the 3rd most popular among people on that site and the price is right.

Just had my mechanic install a K&N oil filter and the same thing happened. Oil everywhere!!! I will never buy another one, he even tightened it down, still oil shooting out. So pissed now I have to mix oil brands because the store I bought Eneos from is closed and my car is my daily smdh

Same here, started happening with mine after a couple hundred miles, also K&N. Same part number as others. Shop I deal with used that instead because the blitz one I bought from Ft86speedfactory was too small for a usdm 86. Will do a fram or something in the meantime I suppose.

This. :laughabove:

Tighten it as much as you can. I'm using Toyota ones. Got em from dealer free. Before I used a Royal Purple filter.
