thanks guys, I've been changing the way I shift, and it definitely has improved by me revving up to 3-4k rpms before upshifting to 2nd. I think the tranny doesn't like it when you grandpa upshift around 2k rpm.

I've gone into detail in another thread and am replying here because we have to remember not to rev the engine until the oil has warmed up. Oil pressure skyrockets because it's barely flowing through the journals.

I keep it below 2.5K when it's cold.

The reason it's tough to shift into second is because you're pausing too long in neutral. When the transmission is still cold the oil is like molasses. Normally, a short pause between gears is no biggie. When it's cold the input section stalls really quickly. Then you're fighting the molasses to spool it back up with the synchros.

If you miss the shift to second, while in neutral, try letting out the clutch and blip the throttle. Then, before it slows back down, in one motion, push in the clutch and gently apply pressure towards second gear. When the input and output match speed it will drop in like butter.

The double clutch will become second nature and is an excellent technique to prolong the life of the synchros by allowing them to do less work. It is absolutely essential should you choose to skip gears on a downshift, for instance, a sixth-to-third-gear shift for a pass.

I have also had the same grinding when going into 5th from 4th or 6th.

I did a trans fluid change to Amsoil 75W-90 Synthetic at 4,000 miles, and problem did not change. I will try Toyota 75W, and see if that changes anything

Why do you say a new transmission is needed tho?

When looking at the color of the fluid, if you shine a light on it and get a lot of gold glitter usually means Trans, if you are still under warranty it's best to push for one last thing you want is a bad Trans when you are out of warranty

But the main thing you have to consider is the level of grind, if the clutch pedal is to the floor and it grinds and won't let you put it in gear then you have a problem, if it's just hard engagement with a little noise then (depending on the level) normal or old fluid

What one person considers a grind might be something different to someone else

What's the deal with these gearboxes? Is there something about the build that isn't consistent? I love mine.

The whole car was built as cheap as possible, a couple of little mistakes, don't do your maintenance like you're supposed to and you run into problems. If you compare maintenance on them compared to other Toyota vehicles you find that it's a lot more demanding

I would say it is the owners and not the build. Anytime someone has a transmission problem, I always ask if it is their first manual transmission car. More often than not, it is.

Yeah, but there seem to be enough experienced drivers here with the same issue and my inner optimist wants to give them the benefit of the doubt.

It's a communicative little gearbox and expects you to have your shit together.

A friend and I both had our 'boxes replaced. Both of us know how to drive. Yeah, it's a small sample size, but really....what are the odds? I've never heard of that with another model.

That's what I'm afraid of. The synchros going through a sweet period after they break in but they keep on wearing.

Mine finally broke in around 9K. I'm at 17K now.

Well i already went to the dealership when the car was less than a month old and they basically told me they will not do anything to it till the transmission blows up.
