There is one huge problem with buying a GTI. The next gen is always significantly better and just a few years away.

I find the OP's musings about his Genesis a bit interesting, as every single car review I've ever read about the Genesis coupe criticizes it's numb steering, sloppy shifter and disconnected handling. As far as driving experience every other RWD coupe under $50k is superior, except probably the Dodge Challenger.

The new Genesis sedan has greatly improved ride and handling so there is hope for the same in the next coupe. But for the time being the Koreans have yet to ever build a great handing, "drivers" car.

I agree with @WofpackS2k

The current Genisis coupe is hardly a sports car and barely a GT to be honest.

It is a "sporty" sedan with 2 doors. It weighs like one, feels like one, shifts like one, and drives like one.

Note that I too criticized the same things. I don't refute any of that. But if you think the coupe drives like a sedan you definitely haven't driven one. It has better feel than a pre 15 mustang, camaro, challenger, and g35. All of which I have driven so I can speak form experience. It does not have quite the same handling as a 370z but wins out in reliability and features. If you doubt me go drive any of these v6 back to back with a genesis and it would be a far cry to say they can compare to the genesis. The genesis is muted but they are even more so and heavier to boot. Again with the exception of the 370z.

When you jump to the 40k price point that opens up Bmw, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus and Infinity. Even I would say the genesis cannot compete with the GT cars offered by those brands. Especially at the 40-50k mark. Not even close no contest. But it is one of the best for 30k and below. Which is where a lot more peoples price point realistically is. Hyundai isn't bmw or audi. But seriously I have driven every single rear wheel drive and all wheel drive car under 35k. Not even bullshitting that. As far as the specifically rear wheel drives go. The genesis felt more connected than anything else. Im not trying to fan boy here. That was my own experience from driving everything.

the 370z handled better but was overpriced with less features, the miata and brz were a blast to drive but too small when i bought the genesis. The mustang, camaro, challenger all felt like big heavy cars with sub par interiors and no feel. The WRX and Evo were fantastic but not what I was looking for. The ST wasn't out at the time but the mazda speed 3 was and it was powerful but I didn't want FWD. The g37 was out of my price range by 5k at 40k. The g35 was interior to the 13 genesis coupe. The golf was a great package but didn't want awd. the civic si which was my first love fell out of favor with me after I got a taste of the other cars. Seriously. I drove everything.

Now though the lexus IS an RC are on the market. Cadillacs ATS is doing really well too. These are cars I would actually have considered now that weren't available then. I would buy a mustang now. I wouldn't previously. I would buy the revamped camaro with magnetic ride and new interior. I would get a 228i bmw which wasn't out then either.

But when you compare it to cars of the time just 3 years ago. It was in the upper echelon of its class. It has since started to fall way behind having seen no change since 13. And that is my reason for saying hyundai shouldn't make it more expensive. I don't think they have what it takes to challenge the luxury brands like Bmw audi mercedes. And if the price gets close to that nobody will buy it. But it can compete with any of the non domestic and japanese brands similarly offered cars all day.

However not for much longer without a total redesign at this point.

Let me say it again. The genesis isn't what I would call sharp. It is numb. It is muted at times. But sedan-ish it most definitely is not.

I am sorry you had a negative experience at the service department when you opened the 13. I have yet to run into bad hyundai service. I know the service department near me would have ripped the whole dash apart to fix that.

The gti and golf r are both nice cars with great fit and finish but I wanted to stay rear wheel drive otherwise they would win out for me.

the genesis isn't the holy grail of cars. Its not an involving driving experience. But if your looking for an inexpensive GT car that is also rear wheel drive. for between 25-30k it is very very hard to beat.

and before anybody chimes in yes. I know you can get a mustang gt for 30k. and yes I would pick that too.

I agree as well. Maybe in 3-4 years I can afford one of the newer generation ones.

Mustang pricing has gotten a bit crazy, but if you're not too picky about options all you have to do is wait for end of year sales and picking up a GT for $30k is feasible. (really shows you how much cars, in general, are over-priced).

OP, I only mentioned $50k since you were talking about looking at cars with a budget of up to $60k. I apologize for not recognizing that when you originally purchased your GC the budget was considerably lower.

OT, I can't wrap my head around your opinion that all Porsches are ugly! I don't often hear that, and enjoy the compliments I receive almost daily for my car (not that other people's opinion had any bearing on my purchasing decision).

As a current mk6 GTI owner, not sure I agree with this. The last three generations (mk7, mk6, mk5) have all just been incremental improvements over the last. I was actually thinking about upgrading to a mk7, but haven't been able to justify the cost. It's always the same formula (refined FWD "warm" hatch), but slightly better in most aspects. Even the shape of the car is largely unchanged over the three generations.

I could probably own any of them (mk 5-7) as a daily/street car and be happy.

From all I've read, the MK7 is full of win. MKV was great. MK6 was significantly better. VW makes a hell of a car. With simple mods, they're fast as hell on track too.

Yeah the mk7 with performance pack is supposed to be a nice upgrade for track because of the LSD, but for how I use mine (mainly street driven), not sure it would make a difference. I guess it might be worth it for someone who brought theirs to the track more often.

Last time I was in my FR-S at the track though, I did come across a mk7 that had some upgrades (tune, tires, suspension). It was definitely quick with just those few mods.

The Genesis felted more connected than any RWD under 35K? I test drove a '13 R spec before buying my FR-S. I turned back after 2 blocks, the steering had 0 feedback, the shifter felt like I was shifting in a bucket of slush. If you say the Gen is more practical, then I am with you. But to say it drives better than any 35K RWD is stretching by a MILE. The twins/370z and miata are 1 million times more connected.

Now I did drive a '13 mustang GT as well, it handled no worse than a Gen and had way more engine.
