Ohhhh the days (Weeks? Months?) of my life lost to that series since 1997.

Not exactly an MMORPG, but would you consider an online racing sim?

iRacing does have a subscription cost running from $12/mo to $179/2 years (no cost for the download, just the subscription). Your first hit is half off, so either $6/mo to try it out or $89.50/2 years. That is for a set number of cars and tracks. There are additional cars and tracks you can purchase in-game, so it can get expensive if you splurge. The up side is that the fees combined with an in-game safety/penalty system really discourage the demolition drivers which plague the online aspect of games like Forza. You can complete a lap without someone ramming you, and sometimes professional drivers will show up to play along. Check out the Racing Sim section of the below article for some more ramblings:

Can't say I've looked into Project Cars much, but it is developed by Slightly Mad Studios. I figured it had your name on it.

Wow, people spend that much money to be on these things? Not sure I would be on it enough to justify that.

I highly recommend Skyrim. I have put over 200hrs into it and still have a number of story arcs i haven't even started nor found all the locations. It isn't an online game but that saves you from dealing with a lot of jerks also.

Another vote here for skyrim or fallout. great games, huge worlds, tons to do, cheap used.

If you like them, then fallout 4 is coming out in the fall and should be amazing.

You sound like you need some of those bang for your buck kind of games. I'd recommend Fallout 3, The Witcher 3, and maybe the Assassin's Creed series (just not Unity cause that was a piece of shit).

another long-time PC Gamer recommending Skyrim, Fall Out 3/New Vegas, and the Assassin's Creed (although assassin's creed may violate the "killing things that look like my coworkers" request).

After that the Mass Effect and Witcher series are very good.

I also fall into the "Cheap: category so Steam is your best friend. All of these can had cheap on Steam. Fall Out 3 is a struggle to run under Windows 8 if you've gone that far with your desktop OS, but there are workarounds for it.

I run an HP workstation with Win7 64 running on a 2.4 GHz processor and 8GB of RAM.

That brings up another concern, gamer PCs. I've always been relieved I didn't have to overhaul my box constantly to be competitive. Looks like that may change.

Your video card will most likely be your biggest concern. Most of the games listed here are a few years old so they may very well run fine on your computer as long as you have a decent GPU.

Nowadays you generally don't have to change things up very often unless you like to live on the bleeding edge or just like to buy new things.

Not sure what processor is in there, but assuming it's only a couple years old it should be fine (I'm assuming it's not though since you're on win7... Unless that's by choice).
Get any fairly decent gpu and you'll be good for years as well.

Big change of pace from the other suggestions: Hearthstone by blizzard. Its a simple card game and free to play, it can be pretty fun once you get the hang of it. You can also play on phones and tablets.

Please, give this a try. 'Shattered Pixel Dungeon' its on the android platform....absolute brilliance. It is so damn difficult and so well made, while being simple at the same time. Its a dungeon crawler, which is sure to make you want to smash your phone into pieces.

Just noticed you said this, take a look at Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. Closest thing I've played to a pirate simulator. I had more fun sailing around for hours destroying/boarding ships and capturing forts than should really have been allowed.

Would be cheap to pick up used for your PS4, like $15-20.
