Simple answer, no. I was actually pulled over last week for no front tag. First time in 12 years. They didn't care that I had tint, exhaust, etc. Also, I just did my emissions testing. You literally drive into a bay, they plug into your OBD2 port and as long as you have no CEL's, you pass. The only thing they even look at is to make sure your gas tank door opens properly.

Many other things suck though. The MVA (Maryland Vehicle Administration) is 5 times worse then any DMV I have been too. Gun laws are stupid strict here too. Personally, I can't wait to get out of Maryland, but it's not all that bad.

I lice in DC currently ( 5 min from AU) and my car is registered in MD. Traffic here is 2 to 3x worse than LA. Laws are pretty awesome as long as you pass emissions your basically solid. I would try and register the car in Maryland if at all possible (also living options are good there too) as the peoples republic of VA is a bit more stringent.

As for Places to live I would recommend MD if you are going to AU. Rockville, Silver Spring, and DC are your best choices but really depends on your monthly rent budget as well as your requirements. If you need any help let me know!

Have you ever been on the 405? Traffic in DC doesn't even come close to comparing to that hell.

Yeap Spent several weeks in Cali. Always come back to DC and its worse lol. Maybe because Cali you have escape routes. I was never really stuck in traffic. Our area seems like you just dont have any options in general lol

Yeah, the road arrangement out here is a lot different than out West. It still boggles my mind how the majority of parking lots are not interconnected, how there are so many places where you can't make a left or a right turn due to odd median placement...

I lived 28 years in California...Spent plenty of time stuck in traffic. I've never seen a traffic jam here like I've seen there though. I once spent over four hours trying to get up the 405 to the 5 from LAX. Four hours to go 24 miles. And I never even saw an accident.

Only 4 Hours for 24 Miles? I have done 4 Hours for 15 miles hahaha. Not sure how long you have been in our area but A emergency event in DC (snomageddon, earthquake etc) or a generic friday evening with nice weather and you are looking at 5hour + Commute times going from 1 side of the beltway to another. haha

TLDR dam traffic

USA Today and Forbes Magazine both say LA has the worst traffic in the nation.
USA today said DC was 9th & it didn't even make Forbes' list.
LA Ranked 10th worst in the world, the only US city to even make the list.
Yahoo News ranked LA worst, DC didn't make the list.
Trust me, I've researched this. It's part of the reason I am pretty sure I'm moving to DC.
It takes me an hour to get 3 miles away from my work. I have a 63 mile commute. I spend 4-6 hours a day in traffic.every.single.day. Not because of weather(it's always 95 and sunny here) not because of an earth quake, but because 19million people in a 100 square mile radius. I'm so over it.

I've lived in MD all of my life, and deal with some of the worst traffic in the state. West side of 695 during rush hour. Typically, the longest it takes me is 2 hours to go 39 miles. I have had a few 3 hour commute days but there is usually a special case for that.

DC traffic is a royal bitch when getting in and out of DC. It's even worse if you don't know what lanes to be in or what turns you're taking. My girl was working in DC, took her 2 hours to get in and 2 hours to get out. She said screw it and took the train.

Okay we get the point that every major city in the US has a traffic problem. Now back on topic: is there anything I need to look out for when looking for housing? I want to live as close to AU as possible, but I have a very limited budget being a graduate student.
