Mine does something similar. If I pull it out of gear and coast to a stop and the AC is on, it will make a chattering noise for about 1-2 seconds. Seems to me that it's due to the rpms dropping too low. If you aren't comfortable downshifting then I would just coast with the car in gear and use the brakes to slow you down. Once the rpms drop to about 2000-1500, drop it into neutral. That's fixed it for me at least.

I agree with your method of "fixing" it, I do the same. But I don't think it's specifically related to RPM. I've looked at the tach several times while I hear it and it's rock solid with no dip or movement when the sound is starting or stopping. Many people on the other thread think it's flywheel chatter. Sounds more like the FI switching over to me. Whatever, I've learned to not worry about it.
