Gas Gauge Faulty?

So, it usually takes me about $25-$30 to fill my tank from a quarter tank to full. One time i put in $10 dollars to get myself home from out of state and my gas gauge did not move from the quarter tank mark. It continued to go down at a normal rate the way it normally does but i had more gas in my tank than my gauge was actually reading because the next day i go to fill the rest of the tank up and the light was on but it only took me $18 dollars to fill the entire tank to full. So, i assumed since its the first time it'll be okay. Just today i fill up my tank from a the light to test it again and it takes $26 but the problem is that the gauge didn't fully reach the top to the full mark. I had about an eighth of a quarter tank missing. So i was wondering if i have a bad sending unit or possibly what can my problem be.

you should start reading how many gallons are actually going into your tank instead of just looking at the price. it'll be easier to see how much gas you're using exactly. plus it's right on the gas pump, near the pricing so it wouldn't hurt to look at it lol

Liquids are measured in gallons or liters. Liquids are not measured in dollars.

On a recent trip through several states, my lowest price for gas was $2.56, and my highest price was $2.99. That's more than a $4 difference for a typical "tank" of gas (which can also vary depending on how far down I let it get before filling). Since the price changes from place to place and over time in the same location, it should never be used as a measure of quantity.

Get yourself a mileage app for your phone and start tracking your MPG using MATH, actual miles driven divided by actual fuel used in gallons or liters. That's the only way you actually know you have an issue. The variation in cost you described was probably caused by other factors.

Don't they teach this in high school any more?

You should have this checked by the dealer asap. I have seen several cases where a bad gas gauge leads to blown engines that are not covered by warranty. It also causes the trunk to require extra force to close if you let it go too long. This could cost you $12K if you do not get it looked at right away.

You are Welcome.

Sincerely,

Sarcastic Bastard

Damnit! I recently filled up in the US and they use gallons not liters. Will using non metric gas void my warranty?

It only voids your warranty if you have let your satellite radio subscription expire.

Oh no I don't have satellite radio so probably never had warranty at all. Sneaky buggers know all the angles.

Yes, it will reset it's self after a couple of tanks as per a few different threads on the subject.

Shhhhh let them think they are still in charge until all the coup plans are complete

What issue? Price variation? OP didn't actually describe an issue with the car, only his lack of understanding of how measures and rates work.
