Re-shot the pics for easy reading. Damn scanner is broken.

I think it's time for a road trip!

great read. thanks for posting. interesting to see how little difference the power to weight ratio between the FRS and the BMW is 13.8 and 13.6, respectively. but i guess when talking about torque, the differences are bigger..

Heh. I've said before the engine in the "refresh" will say Yamaha on it.

Another article talking about how much fun the FR-S is and track times mean nothing.

Yeah its fun but even with a similar power/weight ratio to the BMW the FR-S still gets its ass royally handed to it in all speed/track measurements.

So that BMW feels like sh!t but does this well on a track? Something is not adding up.

BMW: 13.6lbs per HP
Mustang: 11.8lbs per HP
FRS: 13.8lbs per HP

0-60
BMW: 5.2
Mustang: 5.6
FR-S: 6.5

1/4
BMW: 13.9
Mustang: 14.3
FR-S: 15.0

Thunderhill laptime:
BMW: 2:12.5
Mustang: 2:12.6
FR-S: 2:20.3

I know everyone is going to spout tires but I seriously doubt tires will take 8 seconds off the FR-S lap time.

Tires make a big difference, both in compound and width. I expect the BMW is underrated on power. They usually are. Torque makes a massive difference. BMW suspension is more sophisticated. It's a faster vehicle, clearly. It's just not as fun. This is sad when considering how much fun the previous BMW generation was.

In the end, stock, the FR-S has low limits. So what else is new? It was designed to have low limits.

Another aspect is the other 2 cars as tested were $9-11K more expensive.

What would an 86 be like if you sunk $9K into it?

The BMW is underrated. That is all there is to it. Redo the calculation with the 270hp it really has and everything becomes clear.

I hope so. All of the best Toyota engines had Yamaha involved.
