The only thing sporty about the Gen coupe is its looks.

Sure it has a beast of a V6.

But

It handles like a boat, because it is heavy as shit. I mean its a freaking sedan platform in coupe trim.

Even though it has "Brembo" brakes it experiences major brake fade on the track.

It has one of the worst manual transmissions and shifters you will find in a so called "sports coupe".

So if you want a quick and powerful street cruiser then get the Genesis.

If you want a fun to drive car then get a twin. Handling, feel, and fun are all far superior in a twin.

Just be sure you will be happy with its small power output, or are ready to mod it for more power.

IMO (and this is just mine) the Gen Coupe looks like any other "sporty" sedan on the road. The 86 has a truly unique style and it handles like its a rollercoaster on rails. Turn in is incredible even on stock tires, and any "understeer" is cured with a little bit of throttle, like a space shuttle maneuvering thruster. It handles like I always imagined a true sports car should, and had yet to experience in a car I could actually have.

Here's a track comparison:

Modified Twin vs. Stock 3.8 R-Spec @ VIR:
  • Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec - 3:13.9
  • Subaru BRZ - 3:18.6
  • Subaru BRZ mod w/o FI -

Modified Twin vs. Stock 3.8 R-Spec @ Streets of Willow:
Motor Trend Comparison - Randy Pobst
  • Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec - 1:28.71
  • Subaru BRZ Stock - 1:30.32

  • Subaru BRZ mod w/FI - 1:27.012 / 1:28.650

In terms of handling, the Genesis is more like a boat. You will definitely feel the weight. FR-S is quite nimble in comparison.

These Gen Coupes are pre 2013 and the slower 2 liter models.

In the article they state that they tested a 2013 2.0 with 274 hp, which returned a lap time of 1:29.12. The time on the 3.8 R-Spec was actually from a side comment. The comment stated that although too expensive for the comparison, it yielded a lap time of 1:28.71. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement for the added power, but they also said it was more enjoyable to track.

3.8 R-SpecAt $29,625 to start, the 348-hp V-6 3.8 R-Spec was too rich for this test, but its $2250 premium over the 2.0T nets a 0.41-second lap improvement (1:28.71). Pobst: "A more satisfying track experience than the 2.0T."

Seriously, get a Mustang or Camaro if you're considering a Genesis. Their resale value alone will make them cheaper to own than a Genesis.

This. I see no reason to buy a Gencoupe based on the test drive I took in the new Mustang.

I cannot stand the cockpit in the Camaro and that car felt even heavier than the Hyundai. Hopefully the new Camaro is as much an evolution for that brand as the new Mustang was for Ford.

All of that said, I wish Ford would have dropped some weight.

I'm also going to add that those FR shootout cars are on much higher treadwear tires.
