This is true. Now that the initial demand-rush is over, you can haggle a BRZ down into the FRS' price range. I bought my FRS when these cars first came out in 2012, and I picked the FRS because Scion doesn't allow for crazy dealer markups like Subaru did. I could either pay $40k to be put on a waiting list for a base BRZ, or go buy an FRS off the lot for $24,445.

Since Subaru is now giving pretty sweet deals on the BRZs, I'd recommend people just get the Subaru (if you aren't bothered by the mustache).

"Hello yes I am Peter Lau here to pick up my FRS that I have already paid for. I'll take the keys and be on my way now, thanks."

Smart man, pure pricing is bunk 'round here and if you didn't have a car for him to check out you probably should have just let him get on his way.

Doesn't mean he wasn't an asshole.

Edit: I eat my words, some dealerships stopped being assholes, there's two dealers with a combined 15 FR-S under $25k as advertised. Doesn't mean they'll be there when you show up but they're advertised and have no trouble believing you could walk out the door with one new today for $28k after tax/title/license, much better than when I was looking.

Doesn't mean they're still not slimy.

I spent over 1/2 an hour crawling in, under (the little bit I could fit), and around the car. I even opened the hood and touched every exposed part I could. A couple of salesmen stood a few yards away and watched me but never once even paused in their chat nor approached me. Eventually I got tired of waiting for what I thought would be the inevitable "can I help you sir" and went over and asked "does nobody here want to sell me a car?". They looked shock and responded "Oh we have so many people look at it but never buy we figured you were just curious". They did not say it outright but what was implied and what I heard in my head was "we have so many old guys...". I just nodded and walked over to the lady that had just wrapped up with another customer and said "would you like to sell a car". Her response was "I certainly would" and off we went.
So moral of the story is that when it comes to these cars us older guys get judged just as bad as the young ones.
Happened to me and my roommate a couple years ago when we went look at Camaros with my dad.

It was 2011 and I had bought my Mustang GT the year before and my roommate bought his 2008 C6 Corvette Z51 a few months earlier. My dad was looking at one of the more optioned 2SS cars and was sitting in it with the salesman next to it. There was a pretty lick Z06 Corvette parked next to it and my roommate and I were looking it over when the salesman says, "You don't have what it takes to buy that, it's too much car for you guys, why don't you come over here." Given his tone, he meant it, he had us pegged as kids who couldn't afford them and wanted us to keep our hands off. I was 25 and the roommate was 27. My dad heard it and when he did, he decided he didn't want the car anymore and we walked off.

There is no faster way to lose a sale than being a condescending asshole to a potential customer.

I think I might have met one salesperson in my lifetime that knew more about the vehicle I was looking to buy than I did. I do my homework.

This reminds me of when my dad bought a brand new '93 Mazda RX7 with a $10k discount. He saw a dealership ad in the paper advertising an RX7 for about $28,000. Keep in mind the MSRP on these were around $38,000. So he immediately drives over to the dealership and asks about the car. The salesman says "oh we already sold that", then looks in back and realizes it was not yet sold, so my dad bought it on the spot.

The idea of giving such a crazy discount on the car was to get people to come into the dealership asking about it, then tell them that it's already sold and try to sell them on a different Mazda. My dad was just the first one there I suppose.

My wife and I joke about this all the time when we go shopping for high end stuff. We have a combined income that is well above the average in our area but to look at us most of the time we look like we just jumped off the welfare train. I like my ratty old jeans and metal band tee shirts and although slightly better she doesn't exactly dress up to go shopping either. Great example was when we went looking for a plasma TV back a few years ago when they were still really expensive. I was in my normal jeans and a Marilyn Manson tee and she had shorts and an older tank top on. We tried in vain to get a sales guy to help us but they were all to "busy" stocking shelves and chatting. She finally snapped (You guys think I can be bad? you ain't seen nothin') and starts calling for a manger. We finally get some attention and say what we want. The guy hauls us over to the cheapest section (not plasmas) and even explains they have some "great deals" out back. She reaches in her purse, pulls out $6K in cash, lays it on the table and says "can you take this seriously". We then got some of the best service ever! To this day when we go to buy high end stuff the joke of "can you take this..." gets bantered back and forth.

I mean, if it was Canadian money, I still wouldn't have taken it seriously.
