When I bought my FR-S, the salesman admitted that he knew nothing about the car. I said that was OK, we got along fine.
I said all he needed to know was where the keys were ..... Since I was over 70, before a test drive, the dealership did make me show a copy of my recent electrocardiogram ........ ![]() humfrz |

There are car salesmen, and then there are car guys... never the twain shall meet.
And anyone interested in buying a car (spending thousands of dollars), should have done their research enough to outsmart the poor car salesman. I learned enough, just from this forum, to teach my dealer a thing or two about the FRS he sold us. |

"edit: OH YEAH. he told me that forced induction, if installed by a professional, is covered under warranty! LOL"
How odd, my dealer said the exact same thing. "Professional" being the dealer where I bought the car. Does that need a "LOL"? Bet you torture animals, too, yeah? |

The salesman sounds like he was not liking the fact that he was being one-upped. It was pretentious of him to tell you that he'd let you test drive only if you "educate" him on the car.
Unfortunately, it's the other way around for me sometimes. I have customers that come in, displaying arrogance and lack of respect. Recently, I asked one of them a simple, "Do you know the Scion process?" and they gave a, "Like I care" body language with their "no." They weren't even my direct customers. I just was providing help to one of my newer fellow sales consultants because I'm the designated Scion Ambassador. So, I tried to give a very brief explanation of Pure Pricing (which he gave me with a "we'll see about that" look) and how most of our FR-S is at a port, ready to be shipped up, because of the fact that we personalize them to the customer's preference before fully bringing them up here. Because all our FR-S that WAS on the ground sold out January-February faster than what the manufacturer could produce, we had none left on the lot, which I also tried to explain to him, but he kept cutting me off, practically blowing off everything I said as if I'm lying. His "tough guy" attitude started to crumble the moment he learned I owned a RS1.0. (I was so tempted to tell him I would let him try mine out, but with his current personality, I wouldn't trust him with any of our vehicles.) So, in those few minutes of him being an arrogant, difficult, customer, when all I was trying to tell him is he could either just wait and hope for the next unreserved FR-S to show up or he could place a refundable deposit, I just practically told him to go to scion.com to learn the Scion process and that my fellow sales consultant will just take his name and number so she could inform him when one was on the lot. Apparently, after I had walked away, when she asked nicely for the information, he tried to be a chauvinistic prick by responding, "Whoa, whoa. Don't you think you're going too fast?" After all that foray, I told her that if the FR-S does arrive and he wants a test drive, either let me go with him or if she does, kick him out if he tries to drive it like he stole it. (Yes, I know some of you feel that you should be entitled to test drive the car to its maximum potential, but look at it this way; If you're trying to sell your car, would you let the potential buy it drive it hard with the potential that they'd just walk away after their moment of joyriding? Wouldn't you think it's fair that until the vehicle is liable under their name, they shouldn't drive it hard?) |

The sales person could be the biggest expert on the cars there ever was and many would still come on here and say they were dumb as a stump just because they don't agree. A lot of what get's presented as "fact" here is in reality opinion and since it is very subjective is open for debate.
Hell, I am shocked when we get 4 people on this forum that agree on some of the more contentious subjects. If I walked into a dealership and the salesman started telling me how the car is slower than minivans, has this crippling torque dip and is just too noisy to drive for any long period I would be pulling up a chair and the guy better have a free calendar because we are going to be there a while. On the other hand there are many people here that would now think he was the best informed and correct sales guy in the history of sales guys. Like Phantom said, not all costumers are wonderful either and if the attitudes that come across on this forum are present when they are buying then the sales person is doomed from the start no matter how much he/she knows. Same old song and dance that we only hear one side of the story on here (not talking about you there Att) and it is easy to take the side of the guy telling it since we only have their version to run with. I doubt that I would last 5 minutes in the job if I had to deal with some of the people in here when they were looking at a car.

Personally, I wouldn't have played 20 questions to get a test drive. My response would have been, "I hope you're kidding." It's up to the salesman to convince me I should be in that car, not for me to convince him. If a salesman had pulled that on me, I would have told him to fuck right off and and asked for the sales manager just to speak with him just long enough to tell him why I was headed to another dealership.
