Pretty much the same except we are smarter, better looking and are just overall more amazing.

I spent about ten days in Canada but for most of it I was in the wilderness. Main thing I remember about Canadians is their tea is hot and there was an old guy at McDonalds that told me a joke.
Canadian: do you know the forecast for tonight?
Me: not really
Canadian: dark!

People had FI long before ECU mods were available.

Out of all the FI cars on this forum, I don't think more than a handful of them use standalones.
There would just be changes to the way fuel is adjusted for FI.

We used to use FMU's that adjusted fuel rail pressure based on boost levels.

Fuel economy sucks and AFR's sometimes had to be too low, but it worked.

I would imagine independent port electronic FMUs would be developed that would allow for more localized control. It'd be cheaper than stand alone units but not as good as remapping the stock ecu...

Most people seem to forget that in the US the with good ol EPA tuning your car is technically tampering with emissions equipment and is illegal anyway.

I dunno if the Canadians want to be grouped into us PNW folks as we are always extremely depressed and even borderline suicidal since it's always dark and rainy here.

Yep, definitely moving to the PNW now, it sounds perfect. I love dark and rainy, and I'm often extremely depressed

Another article on the original topic of tuning with info on both GM and John Deere. It's one thing to piss off GM fanboys (which includes me), but you start messing with the John Deere crowd, you got a problem.

I think the main issue with this is if it makes it illegal for the tuners or companies themselves to modify the ECU.

Right now, even if its illegal for the owner to be running a certain tune, it wasnt illegal for the tuner to create the tune (all they have to do is say "Off-Road use only" or etc.)

But if it becomes illegal, it wont be the same as jailbreaking iPhones or rooting Android phones. Those are small operations run by the community and don't cost users any money. Tuners charge a lot for the work and tools involved, they're also a lot easier to track down a serve a lawsuit to.

Hopefully it wont come down to this, or at least not for all cars (IDGAF if you lock down the corolla, leave our enthusiast targeted cars alone)

On the plus side maybe it would expand the market for standalone controllers and the higher volume of sales would lower prices?

Very good point.
They cost so much now because why bother but if they started selling a pile of them the price would certainly drop.
