That's why not discussing politics is in the forum rules. I'll just leave this here, because it really is the case with the other thread:

And, if anyone tries to pull any of the sh*t that ended up locking that thread, please understand that reports will be made.

I believe it was mentioned in the other thread as well that if something is encrypted, people will eventually decrypt or break it, with enough demand (think jailbreaking iPhones, rooting android, etc.). There is enough demand in this community that it can and will happen. It will be illegal, but you know that people will do it anyways.

Don't use Subaru's ECU.

Stand alone FTW! :P

Also, how would anyone even go around monitoring something like that? I never go to stealerships seeing as how they tried making me pay $100 for a simple oil change. So who's going to be checking that I have an unmodified ECU, are they going to be sending one-time into the field with OBDII cables next to their tazer and handcuffs?

Again as I stated, this is going to be an issue for future car owners.

They cannot go backwards and claim copyright on something we have not agreed to for current car owners. This is the important part that most articles about this leave out.

You are likely correct...which means increased resale value for our cars!

Vehicle inspection varies by state, some states have yearly safety inspections which could hypothetically include the check, many states have regular emissions checks for vehicles which include an OBD scan to verify the emissions equipment, checking that the ECU is protected would be an easy checkbox to add.

So I take it Oregon doesn't give a fuck what you drive around in as long as you don't get pulled over?

Hmm, thanks for the education. I was unaware how strict other states actually monitor vehicles, I just assumed is was more guidelines than actually enforced rules.

Yea, Oregon has literally ZERO problem with any vehicle with wheels and a motor. You don't even need doors, and in some cases even a seatbelt!

Edit: I do think Portland does biennial emissions checks, but that's city ordinance only.

That's a lot of people though. Every FI kit that uses an ECUtek, flex fuel kits, all OFT users from the very basic stage 1 users to the guys creating their own custom maps, would all be affected. Would people still drop $5-6K on a turbo kit if it meant they had to spend another $2K+ on a standalone ECU? Out of all the FI cars on this forum, I don't think more than a handful of them use standalones.

And as I stated in the same post, it also involves us agreeing to using the ECU code as a license and not outright ownership (which is what we have now). Until that happens, it's fear-mongering that has zero impact on current owners.

And I thought Texas was pretty open with car regulations. Gonna look into moving to Oregon now. . .

If this does gain traction within say... the next year or so, looks like I have to push the date up to get one of the Twins.

I plan on leaving the car stock (apart from exhaust/springs) for at least 6 months to a year before I put on the surgeon gloves and start going to town. But then again, I may not do anything at all - ECU flashing wise!

If you're from Texas you'd fit right in here. Oregon has two types of people, hippies and rednecks. Driving down the road you'll see two types of cars with their respective bumper sticker:
A Prius with

And a Duramax diesel twin stack with

... The kicker is that somehow we all get along quite well! Oregon's state motto is, "Alis Volat Propriis" which I'm pretty sure translates to "Do whatever the hell you want, just don't be a douche."

From what I have seen on here I have sort of come to accept the PNW guys (Oregon and Washington) as demi Canadians! Be that good or bad you can determine for yourselves.

Well then whenever I finally take a roadtrip up there (been wanting to for a couple years) I will judge Canadians by the PNW folks.
