I guess it all depends how far subaru is willing to go with sti version. If its only a retune of the ecu then no, but if there is mechanical change in the engine, then it might be worth it. There are rumors of turbo or s/c upgrade, but who knows

a) It's common knowledge that you're taking a bigger risk when purchasing a first generation car.

b) If you wait for the STI version to come out and you don't like it, imagine how much cheaper the regular BRZ is going to be.

All this talk of an STI version makes me want to get a WRX STI.

Now that is what I want ideally - I can just upgrade the bits when they get released (and I have the money to burn)

But how sure are you they will be released? I'm seeing TRD doing this - but does subaru have this track record?

You guys are very much tempting me. I'm thinking of the blue, switch the wheels and wait for them to release upgrades.

Right - And I really wonder - if they do do a version with carbon fiber widgets - how much more would it cost... and if it's , say, +10-15k then I'll likely just pass on it, as it's not with the extra $$

True, true, that is always an option.

Right, if it's in such low numbers/high demand, surely they won't release an STi until they can at least get the numbers to have it on dealers floors - which could be a while...

Nobody knows this yet. Subaru seemed committed to coming out with an STI version, but there are very little details.

No one here knows yet, it's all just rumor. One of the rumors was a new turbocharged 2.0 that made ~297HP.

Which is going in the new WRX.

Subaru's recent track record since '04 is screwing the customer each year.

'04 to '05 STi they went from 5x100 to 5x114.

The '08 WRX was the biggest turd black sheep of the WRX family. It had horrible brakes, 220hp and turd suspension. For '09 they upped the horsepower to 265 and upgraded the brakes and suspension.

The 2010 WRX had ugly silver trim all over the interior. That changed the next year.

Basically Subaru does whatever they want then the customers bitch and they fix it the next year. I'm sure the BRZ will be that much better next year when they take into account what people want. Then it will be that much better the next year following.

I'm not waiting because I know Subaru's recent trend of doing things. I'd buy the car and be happy. In a year or two trade it in for the newer better model.

My track record has been to upgrade cars every year anyways. My thought is that I'd be happy with this car until the 2014 BRZ comes out, and then I will end up waiting until the fall to see what the 2014 WRX looks like, and most likely trade for another car then.

I did remember reading however that the new turbocharged engine could land both in the WRX and BRZ.
