Garage
I enjoy doing mods for as little as possible, reusing or modding what I already have when possible. It's just more fun for me that way.

The open exhaust is still sitting on my garage floor, waiting to be finished. Along with many other things. Interestingly, a stock overpipe can also plug into where the stock muffler goes, giving you an unmuffled curved exhaust exit behind the back bumper. I had to hack up an exhaust hanger for it. It sounds good and raspy fun when you rev, but the droning is something awful. It made me nauseous.

If anyone in the bay area knows how to weld and has a welder, we can finish this up and try it out. I just haven't had time to finish the cutting and then take it to a welding shop. It is a PAIN to open the stock muffler. The sheet metal is spot welded to the inside frame. The trick is to have a good, large drill bit for metal.

My next mod is adding an oil cooler, probably this Sunday and Monday, since I'm going to Big Willow in a couple weeks. Oh yeah, and I have to swap pads and wheels.

Didn't thank you for posting that video,,, answers a lot of questions and shows me where to cut. I'm hoping that opening up the muffler will be a bit easier at least on the first pass. The plan is to go inside all of the spot welds,, with a little luck I'll have enough room to get the cut-off wheel in there to cut those two pipes. I think I'll also block off the hole directly across from the inlet pipe and well as the two pipes that are no longer being used.

I still haven't found one local for the right price yet. Best I've found is $50 but it's an 1 1/2 hour drive so I'm still looking.

I did this on my E90 m3 and it sounded good, but the cost was 500 bucks to open the muffler and re-weld stuff. I only did this because exhaust was a lot more expensive for the E90 M3.

For the FR-S I would rather spend that 500 on a catback, go single exit if cost is an issue.

If you're looking for a cheap solution to add a more aggressive exhaust note, just get or make a muffler delete.

I've got the Berk single-exit delete and it sounds great, especially for $90 used. Pretty minimal drone, so very tolerable with DD, and it gives the exhaust a much nicer sound. You get those gurgles and pops on down shifts that make you feel all tingly inside and a nice throaty noise at WOT. And in the end it isn't overly loud. The guys in my club who have exhausts like the N1 are way louder than my car, and I think those exhausts sound "ricier."

The first couple days with the delete it was way too loud, but calmed down a lot after a week.

When I deleted the muffler, it was horrible drone all the time with all sorts of nasty other resonances.

As far as costs go,, it'll just be what I spend on another muffler and $50 is about all I'm willing to spend. Don't want to cut up the one I have just yet.

If I connected the pipes inside the muffler it would in essence be a muffler delete. Not ready to go quite that far yet. If what I'm proposing for the first cut doesn't give me what I want,,, the next step would be to cover the perforated pipe on the input side.

BTW,,, how did it calm down after the first week?? Did you just get used to it?

Lol yeah, that's what I meant. I just worded it very poorly. (Long night followed by an early morning at work).

It's shocking the difference though. When I first drove it after installing the delete it was nauseatingly loud, and I'd ridden in Toyobarus with much louder exhausts before then, but now it seems very tame compared to most anything other than stock.
