OEM Muffler Mod????
I'm wondering if anyone has cut open and modded the OEM muffler for a more robust sound?? This is something part of the C6 Z06 guys do and it works pretty well,, and doesn't really cost anything if you have a welder.
I found a video on youtube where a guy cut a muffler open. I'm thinking just cut part of the pipes off to allow a more direct path and maybe seal off the perforated section on the input. Thoughts??? seems like a ton of work to cut open, mod and re-weld the oem one and still be left with the tiny lame tips and full (nearly) OEM weight, but i'm interested to hear the end results.

Thoughts?
I'd rather buy an actual performance muffler or full exhaust than do this. They never sound that great, I've heard plenty of chopped up OEM exhausts and they always sound meh. Even before the muffler you still have two resonators that will "muffle" your sound. I'm very big on custom exhausts, but never on using the OEM mufflers or resonators.

As a sidebar and as I haven't actually seen one yet,, is the muffler just coated steel or somehow stainless??

Z06 mod is to make the muffler into a true straight pipe when the butterflies are open. Very different as it's a variable muffler.
Not sure if the muffler is stainless, but I know the rest of the exhaust is aluminized steel (like most OEM) |

Thanks for the thoughts. You know I modified (but did not install and sold) a set of the Z06 mufflers and it really wasn't that much work. Sure a few hours in the garage but it's what we do right?? As for the tips I get what you're saying but for me it isn't that big of a deal. As for weight,, this will be my DD and I do 110 miles round trip a day to work,,, I'm not racing this one,, weight isn't an issue,,, but an exhaust note is. BTW the number I always heard is 7Lbs per HP. So that would equate to what,,, 4HP for a 28lb exhaust?? Quote:
Not sure what to say here. I only asked for a more robust exhaust note,, can you tell me what was done with the 'chopped up exhaust' and why it was meh? I mean it's a muffler,, this isn't rocket science. Generally speaking most of the muffler players show what the internal design is and I've been looking at them. The beauty of modding the OEM muffler is that all the external stuff fits. That is,, the connection to the pipe from the motor works and the tips are in the right place,,, and I have a welder. Just so you know,, and you can laugh at it,,, there was a time in my life I liked a really loud exhaust,, not so much now. That would of been about 1978,,,,, 1968 Corvette small block,,, header and sidepipes,,, and my future ex. For you young guys,,it's hard to believe,, I was looking good.

Most people will essinatily cover up the perfforated pipes in the muffler and make a solid pipe, or remove the various chambers and run a single straight pipe through the muffler. I've also heard of people removing just the fiberglass "hair", but i haven't heard one of those. Most of the time the car just sounds raspy. It sounds good on a V8, but anything sounds good on a V8 except rasp...
Making a four cylinder sound good is not easy. Making an LS engine sound good is easy.

There's nothing like a V8,,, I'll give you that. But how do we mod a stock muffler and make it sound good? My father used to tell me,,, it doesn't take any talent to go first class. Of course the explanation was it's easy to write a check,,, hard to make it happen on your own. Old school was we modded what we wanted. There are so many guys here that seem to want a good exhaust note,,, but they're strapped for cash. Wouldn't it be great if we could figure out the right mod to the stock mufflers and share it. I've already seen a bunch of possibilities and configurations. Of course my old guy (need to be quite) is different than some.

could be on to something...some of the BMW guys do this too, and they basically end up with a pretty good sounding setup.
