I hate that feature on some cars! Especially the ones that won't unlock until you put the car in neutral or park. Almost broke my arm several times trying to get out of a buddy's F250 when he stopped but it was still in gear.

Honestly this sounds like a safety feature to me. I imagine if you're having to break hard enough that a crash might be imminent, the doors unlocking would be beneficial, so the air bag doesn't suffocate you, and it can pop out the door a bit if needed, and for getting you out of the car (if the door can still manage to open) since you wouldn't be able to unlock the car well with the air bags deployed, potentially injured, etc? That's my guess anyway - interesting bit of information nonetheless.

Don't read answer in angry tone there is just no way to respond without sounding sarcastic (which at least this time I am not)!
How will an air bag "suffocate you"? They don't stay inflated long (seconds) and are actually already deflating when you contact them. (I have been told that the FRS side impact ones stay inflated longer then the norm though)
Also the last thing you would want is it to "pop out the door a bit" as they are supposed to hold and cushion you not move away from you.
As I said above the doors unlock if the airbag is activated so that there is access in the event of an incident. There is no need to have the doors unlock just for braking quickly.
These are not "my guess" as this is one of the things the company I work for makes so I have to have at least a working knowledge on the systems (so the engineers can't BS me).

I meant crushing, not suffocating - as in putting pressure on you (taller people especially), or if you got impacted from the side. I was thinking about it terms of where the phrase "roll with the punches" comes from - where less rigidity, or resistance acting against the force being applied is going to be better for dispersing that force, and causing less devastating damage in the long run. Although, if it is a safety feature - I assume it's more likely just to make access to the passenger(s) easier under minor impact, since the passenger(s) could still be dazed, confused, or have injuries that doesn't allow them to open the door on their own.

However, for all I know the doors unlocking could have just been due to the transfer of force through the car, or something else as the OP was breaking, and may not be the result of engineering. But I was just musing, and thinking out loud - not suggesting anything as fact.

I'm fairly sure you guys know that unlocking the doors has nothing mechanically to do with keeping them closed (secure, shut, whatever), correct?

If the doors become unlatched in a crash they would do so even if locked. The lock mech doesn't do anything different to the latch it just won't let it be opened without a key/fob. Locking your door will keep people out but does not make it any stronger.
I believe they unlock so people can get you out.....you know rescue and stuff.

Ya that was my point! "All cars (in Canada at any rate) made after 2004 are required to have systems that unlock the doors if the air bags are activated."
Was also trying to get the message across that locking your doors does not make the latches stronger.(Like Trom just said as well).
There are a pile of misconceptions about the safety systems in cars that can lead to their abuse, alteration and unwarranted concern.

I'd be careful with posts like that being from CA. Some dumbass in Sacramento read your post and is now trying to figure out how tax or ban door locks, and the greasy, oily shit that overflows from CA govt winds up everywhere else.
