Really curious to see pics of their suspension setup and any reinforcement / shielding they added under or around the car.
Big ups for taking the 86 to new stomping grounds and absolutely killing it like a bozz!

WOW this is exciting. What were changes to the suspensions? Heavy duty shocks and a small lift? Did he try to keep it close to stock while still changing small parts to cope with the rally stage? Any other mods beside the tune?
I'm watching this and feeling ashamed that I don't even dare take my car out on a little snow...

Hello to all, I just read all this thread and thank you for all the support!
I am Lucho Alayza, 29 year-old rally driver in Peru. I have 10 years racing and always trying to win the top races and championships in my country. I started with a 1600cc Toyota G6, with which I won the 1600 national championship in 2008. Then I drove a 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI on the N4 class in 2009, but it was too expensive to maintain, so on 2010 I got an old-school Toyota Starlet KP62, named "The Shogun" by the japanese-peruvian technician who developed it 20 years before. I overhauled that car and it was my first RWD experience. Sadly, it started to break on every part I didn't change, and lost many sponsors, so on 2012 I decided to get a Corolla AE86, prepared just a few years ago, so all the parts were new. That car made me win several races, including Caminos del Inca two years in my class (2000cc N/A). With that experience, on december of 2013, I spoke with the managers of Toyota in Peru and we started this GT86 project. I want to share with you how I built this car and share some of the costs so you can have an idea. Thanks to all my sponsors that made it possible to afford!!! I got a brand new 2013 GT86 (Limited) from a local store by $29,500, the weight was 2600lbs, 200 above the minimum of the class. The first thing to do was to completely dismantle it and start with the body. I got a Custom Cages FIA approved roll cage, made with cromoly tubes, so the roll cage weight could not be an issue. $4500 only the tubes. With the roll cage installed, I also reinforced the chassis to withstand all the abuse of a rally season. Also tried to take out some metal parts to reduce weight, but without compromising the car's structure. If I do so, I would have to build a new car every year. Another parts were replaced, such front and rear bumpers by fiberglass (not much weight reduction to be honest) and the rear windshield by polycarbonate. I kept the original hood and fenders because they are already light. And my next step is to reduce weight from the doors by removing the electric windows. I didn't do it before, because Caminos del Inca is such a long race that I needed to control my windows on the long road sections. The rear seats floor was replaced by a lower single metal plate, to carry the big fuel tank (explained below). I also reinforced all the suspension parts, because the originals are very thin. That duplicated the weight of each one, so this year I will make or buy cromoly ones. To resume all, now the car weights 2900 pounds! 500 over the minimum, so I have lots of work to do! The engine is the same FA20, nothing different inside, but outside has: - TODA Big Throttle Body (Bob told me it didn't do anything) - TODA Lightweight pulley kit - TODA Lightweight flywheel - K&N intake kit - Nameless 4-2-1 Header with 2.5" single line to the end - Ecutek flash by Bob, that you already saw the results This year I plan to put a supercharger to go to another class (single drive cars, but over 2000cc, could be N/A, turbo o supercharged) to try to beat those N4 cars on Caminos del Inca! For the local championship I cannot get points on that class, so I will develop another FA20, with custom works on the cylinder heads, and hope Bob will help me with the tuning. My hardest rivals use a Honda K20A engine, so it is very difficult to beat them with my limited FA20. I could put a K20, but as a Toyota sponsored driver I prefer not to do that. The gearbox is an old 5-gear Saenz TC840, straight pinions. I overhaul it all every year and no problems. The stock 6 gearbox is fine for fast tarmac stages, but with the 4.10 final drive is too long. Getting top speed with that combination is almost impossible. I have a 5.13 Cusco Final Drive with 1.5Way Cusco RS LSD. That FD with the 6gear gb, made me reach 140mph at a save 7300rpm. With the Saenz gearbox I do not pass over 100 mph, but the acceleration is impressive, and on gravel stages I don't need too much top speed. The axles are DSS and can hold 600hp, so they are a guarantee for the hard rally use. I had to make some mods to adapt the Saenz gearbox inside the car, such cutting the tunnel, making an adaptor to use the stock bellhousing and making a new driveshaft, but nothing complicated. I am developing another engine mounts because that gearbox is very aggresive. The suspension is a Baratec, developed by Barattero in Argentina. The kit cost $9500 and is excellent. I can setup the compression, bump and rebound. Many top rally drivers in Argentina use that too, because of the high quality. I use it also con tarmac stages because we have bumpy sections and speedbumps... The fuel tank is a 22 gallon Fuel Safe with all the quick fill kit. But I have already a 26 gallon ATL just waiting to install. I need the most of the fuel capacity for that long stages of Caminos del Inca, as the car consumes 8 mpg and the stages are some over 155 miles, and I need also an extra, you never know. I use the stock fuel pump but I will upgrade to the Deatschwerks DW65C and install two of them, one as auxiliary. All the fuel and brake lines are aeroquip. On the brakes I have a Tilton pedal box, with bias regulator. On gravel I turn it to 35/65 (rear) and on tarmac almost 45/55. The calipers are from 2007 Impreza WRX (4-piston front, 2-piston rear) and I am still looking for the most convenient brake pads. I do not have a big brake kit for tarmac... yet. The tarmac wheels are EvoCorse 17" and for gravel the same EvoCorse but 15". I had to polish them in the inside, because it didn't fit with the stock direction arms. As I told before, the ECU is the same but with ecutek flash, tuned by Bob from Circuit Motorsports. I was in Lima in a local dyno, and Bob was in Orlando, and the e-tune was perfect. Just a couple of hours to get over 20whp from stock and an amazing torque curve, with no torque dip at all. For rally use, torque is more important than horsepower, specially for me that I race in twisty mountains. So since 2014 was the building year, 2015 will be the developing year. More power, less weight, more aerodynamics maybe. I will try to share all as I can! |
