My plan is to buy less than one month before the trip and use the insurance grace period and a trip permit. This should allow me to do the whole thing legally for $30 on top of the car cost

Edit: After reviewing some of my more recent OR titles, there is no longer multiple spaces for reassignment. This means in order to keep everything legal, I'll likely be buying a little over a month in advance, transferring the title to me immediately, then making the trip on a temp permit.

All great choices, I'd totally go with the Volvo convertible!
(No chance in hell it would pass tech at an autocross though)

In WA the trip permits are $30 for 3 days, can use up to 3 permits consecutively.

I also think you need to transfer car ownership in your name within 15 days.

So if you do everything by the book, you gotta buy the car, tow it to your yard/garage, do the road trip using the permits, and sell it within 15 days of the purchase?

If I decide to do this, I'd buy a car 2 months in advance at least, fix all the obvious broken stuff (but still stay under budget), transfer the car in my name, and get the title in hand by the start of the road trip.

the transfer in title is only required in that amount of time if the car is originally a WA car. If you happen to buy a out of state car, you only need to transfer title/ownership once tabs expire but you will need to carry around with you the signed title and bill of sales should you get pulled over.

how do i know, i had one hell of a time getting a car i bought from oregon plated. paid 2000$ for it and the state wanted to charge me taxes on 8000$. I told them to fuck right off and drove the car around for the next 3 months amassing quotes and fixing the car up. by the time i was ready to register the car i had something like 8000$ worth of quotes/repair (ok so 6k of the quote was to replace two cats at the dealer) and told the state it could fuck itself with the car being worth 8000, only paid taxes on 1k.

If I planned to use this loophole, I'd be limited to out of state (read Oregon) cars.
Will keep it in mind.

So how about a new rule: keep your road trip car a secret until the day the road trip starts.

If you fail tech you get a zero for that challenge.

... or you man up and fix the issue / grease some palms
