Figured out the issue after I ran into it as well.. Could be the same problem, maybe not.
Car off, oft already plugged in and oft screen off/black from previous drive. Key start ignition on, then again to accessory (push to start). The oft then comes to life however would not flash my tune. I turned the car completely off to where the oft screen was still on and restarted the same process. Works fine. Experimented with this a couple times to make sure with the same outcome. Basically I think the oft needs to be plugged in with the screen on before the cars ignition is turned on to start the writing process without error.
