The space saver spare reminds me of this video where they put 4 of them on a c63 amg. Drift king .

Agreed, having a decent jack and tire iron would be nice too, I glanced at the provided ones and... they'll do in a pinch but I wouldn't mind better quality equipment.

I think it's hilarious that people are talking about the weight savings of removing somethings as useful as a spare tire; yet on all the threads where people have talked about height/weight there are TONS of people 200+lbs

Yeah, it's funny people want to remove the useful spare tire when they're carrying one around their belly!

I can say this, I'm big-boned.

While I don't actually get a flat that requires needing a spare(never in 22 years), I have had nearly every single tire I own have a nail removed.

My favorites are the people saying that you're more likely to get a hole in your radiator / oil pan than a flat tire.

Ill be keeping in for my everyday driving around town. But will take it on the weekends when i go out with friends for a drive.

But since this is a RWD car would keeping the spare in = more grip for the rear tires? Or will it not even make a diffidence

Just going to leave this here:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6282

If this had really been a flat tire, he would have made it all of a couple days before needing to use his spare. That's reason enough for me to keep it in the car.

Food for thought.

Just a thought but removing this significant amount of weight where it sits from the CG (out on the arm) you will negatively affect the balance and shift the distributiom more towards the front.

Passenger weight wouldn't have an offset impact since I suspect the CG is around the front seats somewhere.

The car's performance is not all about weight/horsepower, its about balance.

Sorry, but I will never buy into this 'balance' argument for a spare tire... its ~30lbs you will not feel(not significant enough). It will not 'shift' distribution literally, only take away from the f/r split via subtraction.

*Theoretically* it will fudge the weight split (less than 1%?) but it will also make it faster, lighter, more fuel efficient and less tail happy... *theoretically*.

Also if it is still a concern a lightweight battery (or a month of exercise for some) will negate the *issue*.

If perfectly balanced split was a practical concern Id worry about the extra ~100lbs from an AT. :happy0180:

But if you really think that you won't "feel" the difference in weight distribution if you take out the spare tire, then you probably wouldn't notice any difference in acceleration or fuel economy either.

However, I'd still say that the "benefits" of removing the spare tire will be outweighed by the weight balance being slightly off. Sure, you may not start sliding around because of it, but just look at the difference when you relocate your car's battery to the trunk. Even though a battery is probably heavier than a spare tire, it's still something to think about. Just look at the Evo... the VIII and IX were roughly 59/41 or 60/40, whereas the X is something like 56/44 or 57/43. I'm sure that there were other things done, but I bet that the battery moving to the back played a big role.

I hear what you're saying but I really do believe it can make a difference.

I don't know the exact math since I do not know where the CG is but I'm assuming its somewhere around the space between the front seat passengers.

The AT is near CG and has less affect than something that is further out like a spare tire. It's a matter of how far from the CG you are on the "arm" of the lever.

Think of it like a lever similar to a see-saw. Remember how you can balance it by changing the length of the board from the fulcrum so the lighter person is further out on the board than the heavier one?

Also, you can put as much weight as you want on top of the fulcrum (CG) and it doesn't change the balance. That's why passenger weight will affect performance (HP) but will not affect balance.

Guys, u've been talking about the effect on CoG. But, are you sure that the vids of the JDM ones on track lapping or drifting been performed with the spare? Don't think so! I think the spare been added for legal commercial requirements
