999 is hard on rotors. Be prepared for them to crack at the track... will need to bring spares.

I think brake pads are like tires and coilovers, it's really a personal preference thing. And personally, I really like StopTech street performance pads. Great dual pads with good modulation. Doesn't fade or dust or noisy. Not to mention they're pretty cheap (130 for a set).

I did all year with them - 13 track days - 3 days of MRLS and the rest at T hill. I don't daily my FRS so it's pretty much all track wear. I'm completely stock so it might not do well for those with more power. I want to put in front brake ducts but cutting my wheel wall is not an option

I've moved on from those for 2015. Currently running XP12 front and HC800 rear. Just did a MRLS day last Saturday. Car felt pretty good

I've cracked my fair share of OEM replacement s2000 rotors using CarboTech XP12 pads. I'm sure 999s would have a similar effect. Earlier in the thread I expressed interest in trying CR pads before the 999 because I'm a fan of not going overkill aggressive with the pad material. I was able to go less aggressive with the CarboTech pads after a BBK upgrade and I'm very happy with the XP10s I currently use. I felt the Xp 12's were overkill with the increased heat dissipation ability of the BBK.

I can't believe you got 13 track days out of a set of StopTech Street pads. I have a set of those right now since they came with my aforementioned BBK. I've never wanted to use them on a track since I tried AutoX'ing them 1 time and was disappointed in their initial bite and overall ability to scrub off speed in short distance. I was willing to bet my bottom dollar I could get them to fade away on a track and I was worried they'd start to crumble after a few sessions.

Since we're talking about brake pad wear...

I'm running XP10 front, XP8 rear. It is what I ran with my S2000, and experienced similar wear front to rear.

However, with the FRS, my rear pad wear is really low, as in I did 3 full days at Thunderhill (2 days on stock tires, 1 day on Dunlop Z2, all stock tire size), and my front pads were say 75%, and my rear pads still looked new.

This past weekend I did 2 full days at Laguna, with new RS3 (again, stock tire size), and now my front pads are about 50%, and my rears around 75%-80%.

Is this the kind of wear everyone is experiencing? Is staggering the compound not the thing to do for these cars?

CSG does not recommend staggering pads.

The StopTech street pads is probably not good for auto-x. It is like you said, it has no initial bite. I got the StopTech OEM kit because my buddy at StopTech said those are the same pads they use at some races. I do like the modulation and they are dependable from not fading. Not to mention they last a good season. But again, I didn't daily the FRS at all. After 15 months, I have less than 10600 miles on the car. All track miles. I'm sure I can't get that many days in if I daily it.

I'm on XP12 because those were barely use when I tracked my WRX (and blew the motor). I'm still using the same StopTech slotted rotors from last year, so they should hold up better than OEM rotors and hopefully they'll last longer than the XP12s *knock on wood* I might try CR next because a few of my S2000 friends are on them. They do low 1:40s @ MRLS so if it's good for them, I'm sure it'll be good for our car too

Hope you kept those stoptech pads... they'll be a good backup if nothing else

Nice. I'm at 52k miles, boosted, tracked heavily and daily driven everyday. Lol my poor car...

I wonder if the brakes are more front bias. When I took off the stoptech pads. My fronts were done. probably at 2mm. But I had probably 40% left in the rear.

There is no correlation between being hard on rotors and cracking the rotors. Being hard on rotors causes grooves on the surface of the rotor and dusting. Cracking is caused by thermal cycles.

Perhaps the 999 is cracking the rotors because they have more thermal capacity than the other pads you're using, allowing you to run longer/harder without fading, which in turn, makes your brakes get hotter.

By the way, you'll crack rotors faster with XP12 than 999. XP12 holds all the heat on the surface of the pad, instead of conducting it through the pad like the 999. That's why the pad is rated for a higher temperature...

Square pads will yield better results.

You can brake later and/or harder, if you're getting that much life out of your pads.

Please enlighten us. We've turned down 7 different FULL sponsorships for brake pads, so that we can purchase 999 for our own use.

I wasn't a believer until I was forced to buy/use them at the last event (due to my front pads being toast half way through the day).

I don't think I will use anything but 999's from now on. David said the 999's on his car have lasted quite a long time and he daily drives them... so I hope I get some life out of them at least.

I daily drive 999 and last me 11 track days of 4 MRLS, 3 Sonoma Raceway, and 4 THills. This is on OEM rotors which were still fine after total 25 track days - combined with 14 track days on Club Racer before I switched to 999..... 999 just make me smile even when sleeping lol
